All Things About Golf

I should have googled before I put that out there. Block is already in this weeks event The Colonial in Ft Worth and The Canadian Open after that.

He'll have to work in the US Open Qualifier sometime soon as well.

Block played well in his US Open Qualifier, with -5 over 36 holes but finished 6TH (out of 27), and only Top 3 advanced, 2 shots out of a Playoff.

He finished 1 shot behind former PGA Champion Jimmy Walker who also did not make it.

PGA Tour, LIV Golf, DP World Tour announce merger

The PGA Tour, DP World Tour and the LIV Golf League, which have been embroiled in a bitter legal battle for more than a year, have agreed to merge and move forward in a larger commercial business, the circuits announced Tuesday.

The tours called the stunning development "a landmark agreement to unify the game of golf, on a global basis."

The landmark deal was reached without the knowledge of many PGA Tour members and LIV Golf players and agents.

Said one PGA Tour player reached by ESPN on Tuesday, "No f---ing way."

A golf agent, who represents a couple of high-profile LIV Golf players, told ESPN that he was unaware of the merger.

"You just made my heart skip a few beats," the agent said, before the deal was officially announced.

In a statement, the circuits said the parties have signed an agreement that "combines PIF's golf-related commercial businesses and rights (including LIV Golf) with the commercial businesses and rights of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour into a new, collectively owned, for-profit entity to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a model that delivers maximum excitement and competition among the game's best players."

The circuits said the agreement ends all pending litigation between the parties.

The three tours said they will work "cooperatively and in good faith to establish a fair and objective process for any players who desire to re-apply for membership with the PGA Tour or DP World Tour following the completion of the 2023 season."

Wow. I was just starting to enjoy the animosity in an odd way.

I found this quote interesting:

"It's insanity," the PGA Tour player said. "The LIV tour was dead in the water. It wasn't working. Now, you're throwing them a life jacket? Is the moral of the story to just always take the money?"

More to be revealed, I am sure. Personally I hope Greg Norman is required to crawl in a hole and vanish forever.

The PGA made all these players take the arrows and now they have nothing to show for it. LIV pulled off a Michael Scott paper company in real life. This is truly incredible and will cost Jay his job. There is no way any player on the PGA tour can trust him ever again.

Good for the players who took the LIV money and left. It's a prime example of greedy company leadership not paying their high performing employees more, throwing them under the bus when they leave for somewhere that does, all when that leadership would have done the exact same thing in their position and proved it out two years later.

Free market for the win.

It's entirely possible that is true, but until all the details are released it may be jumping to conclusions.

- PGA Tour purses have already increased and they have reaped the rewards of that (though perhaps just a fraction of what LIVers) received.
- They could also get paid handsomely in the future.
- How much of what the LIVers were "guaranteed" will they actually get? Maybe every penny, but maybe not.

All I am saying is that I am going reserve judgement until there is more information.

As for the Golf itself, there is virtually nothing from the LIV tour that I think improves the product.

- No cuts. I've always liked how the 1st 2 rounds reduces the field to true contenders.
- 54 holes. Not a true test.
- Shorts. Mostly indifferent, but to me looks goofy.
- Music. Gives me a headache.
- Graphics. Too confusing.
- Team Golf. Goofy, don't give a rip.
- Same starting times. I am ok with that for early rounds, but final round it reduces drama.

Apparently, the blood money that LIV used to finance it's operations was only evil until the PGA got a piece of it.

If you're a player that remained loyal to the PGA and rejected the huge signing bonuses handed out by LIV, you might be just a tad bit angry today.

As a golf fan, I'm happy that all of the best players will be competing every week for improved competition. The thought that this merger will give Norman and Mickelson a bigger platform makes me want to hurl.

The lack of leadership from Jay from beginning to end was just astonishing, horrendous really. What a dumbf'k

Not exactly sure how the media is going to spin this one but unequivocally, this is a major WIN for the golf consumer and the golf fans who want to see the best players playing in the biggest events. 100%

Probably the same kind of Thank You that Donald gave his fellow USFL Owners when he lead that organization into the toilet.

He know of what he speaks.

Such a failure. Billionaire, TV star, US President. Everything he touches goes to the toilet. :)

Regardless of how this all shakes out, the players all finding out via Twitter is a very bad look.

From scanning these, just a gut feel but I think Padraig Harrington comments via Twitter will eventually ring true. It probably will take a while to get there. Here's what Paddy is saying:

Surprised that this merger has happened so quickly but not surprised it’s happened. Definitely in the financial interest of both sides. Definitely in the financial interest of the players even though some of those who gain will feel like they’re losing. Good for the cohesion of global golf.

Further comment:

Again without knowing the facts, it seems the PGATOUR acted quickly. The tour was obviously under pressure delivering on its tv contracts with losing some of it’s marquee players to the new entity LIVGolf The tour by acting early, while they still have the upper hand, will end up with the controlling share in world golf.

We do know a few things.

LIV golf is dead.

The deal is between the public investment fund and the PGA Tour along with the DP World Tour.

The players that left for LIV will have to pay a penalty to get their membership status back.

Lots of people are gonna be pissed and they are rightful to be pissed.

This was exactly what I thought when I heard the news. But I don’t follow golf too closely. So I’m glad someone had the same thought

Trump's second term.....

Anywho.....I'm guessing there were a whole lot more people providing pressure to make this deal than the supposed three people behind closed doors. Monahan has absolutely destroyed his public image and will almost definitely resign. But I'm guessing that for his part in pushing this through.....he will be rewarded with LIV cash. Total hypocrite. I read another thought on this being due to the litigation with the PGA. That further scrutinization may lead to them losing their tax exempt status....which they probably shouldn't have anyways. Either way....bad look for the PGA and everyone involved.

Mostly feel bad for the players who turned down the money to stay loyal to the PGA. Just a huge slap in the face. But we'll see. There are scenarios in which this could be blocked.

Don’t prop yourself up on the families of 9/11 and then a year later do a deal with the Saudi’s. You won’t have any answers to any of the questions and you’ll look like a fool.

Many deals are called mergers when they're really not. It's just a PR thing to make it seem like both sides have equal power and control.
The Tony Kornheiser Show/podcast discussed this as expected throughout all of today's episode. Steve Sands from the Golf Channel termed it without a doubt "A hostile takeover".

Saudi Arabia wanted a seat at the golf table and were told to bleep off by the pga tour. So Saudi started LIV and stole a bunch of players from the pga tour. They then went to war with the PGA tour trough the court room which is a battle LIV can make last a long time and bleed the tour out of money. Seeing this the tour back tracked and offer the Saudi’s a seat at the table which is all they antes to being with.

The irony is LIV was suing PGA Tour for monopolist principals and now this new tour will be the largest monopoly of golf ever and no one cares.

True, but did he really have a choice here? If your adversary has $600 billion in assets and you have $100 million in reserves after having already spent $50 million on legal fees.....and you are facing many more years of lawsuits and your sponsors are likely not thrilled about paying for the enhanced events.....don't you choose for the slings and arrows that are headed your way over the likely eventual decimation of your organization?

My own personal hope is the LIV players face a steep uphill climb to get back on the PGA tour. I would like a long enough suspension where their 2 years of accumulating OWG points essentially dry up and they are faced to compete against others with little or no status. Compete where eligible in the majors, I suppose, but not elsewhere without starting over.

The putt sunk a few moments earlier to win it.

I had that on in the background before I was getting ready to sneak to the course for a quick round before dark. That was super cool, Taylor making that putt. Great for Canada, cool story. I would have been good with Fleetwood winning but it was great to see Taylor win it, and win it like that
