per the Echo Press:

Nate Mason did a lot to excite fans as a freshman last season and will come into his sophomore year with some heightened expectations.

“I’m excited about him,” Pitino said. “I thought he had one of the best freshman seasons in the Big Ten. He had to be one of the top five or six guys in the conference as freshmen. He’s fearless. He wants to take the big shot.”

The 6’1” guard averaged 9.8 points per game and shot almost 39 percent from three.

He suffered a thumb injury that required surgery in early April. That was expected to sideline Mason for up to eight weeks, but Pitino is not worried about it slowing down the progress of one of his lead guards.

“He did have that thumb injury, but I thought the timing, I don’t think it’s really going to be too tough for him to rebound from that,” Pitino said. “He needs to have a great year. He’s got to be leery of that sophomore slump. Make sure that doesn’t happen, and I think he will be. I think it will be a very good year for him.”
