Al might be ready to go against Akron

No reason to rush him back but it would be nice if he got some game time before the WI game. Make sure he is healthy.

And it was a stress fracture all long, just like Tubby said originally, and the time line is the what Tubby said originally. The plantar fasciitis was made up.

No reason for Al to play unless its for fitness reasons. Get him 100% for the B10 season. @ Wisconsin, @ Michigan State, Indiana, @ Ohio State...he has to be 100% for this stretch for the Gophers to have a shot at 3-1...all 4 are losable games even with Wisco being down. Whats Bo Ryan's record at home? Like 60-5? Let the kid rest and find out who the real backup PG is

He needs to be back for SDSU to get rid of some rust. Remember the epic returns of Leuer, Turner, and Joseph? A warm up game, even for only 10 minutes of PT, is a must.

Tubby said it wasn't a stress fracture.

"Al Nolen has some problems with his feet right now, I'm not sure exactly what it is... it's not really a stress fracture. They want to watch him and get him off his feet for awhile," Smith said.

+1 I'd replace "needs" with "it would be ideal" as health is the #1 concern but I agree with this.

I interpreted that to mean "It is a condition very similar to or will soon be a stress fracture but I don't know what to call it since I'm not a doctor"

Still more accurate that plantar fasciitis which doesn't even involve the bone.

A stress fracture is better than plantar fasciitis because it heals on its own and you can do some stuff for it. A lot of players have missed a ton of time with PF (Wally Szcerbiak anyone?) and it is the worst pain I have ever felt when I had it. Tearing my ACL hurt less than the worst days of plantar fasciitis.

It's tough to tell exactly what he meant without knowing the full context of the quote. Either way, it's been a bit of a joke with all the mixed reports.

Marcus Fuller has been much closer to reality on this round. I'm guessing the actual injury is a stress reaction that became a stress fracture, but oh well. I'm just glad Nolen should be back.

I find all of this anonymous source stuff to be kind of ridiculous when it comes to the coverage of this team, but I guess that is what it has come to as the head coach isn't all that accessable.

Coverage of injuries is challenging. Some players recover quicker than expected. Some don't. Some suffer setbacks during recovery. And sometimes people aren't forthright/are guarded with information. It isn't an exact science.

You do see the mildly humorous irony in your first sentence, right?

Oh I see the irony. I just think that people who cover the Gophers use sources too much for too many things.

FTB, you caught that 1st sentence from the 2:50 post by anonymous also. I just shook my head and told myself that after reading his/her post it was time for a beer and watch The Weather Channel.

We need Nolen back yesterday. If it's PF, it's a pain issue. If he can deal with it, suit him up.

We should all remember, that when dealing with reports of an injury, the only sources who actually know something aren't allowed to say anything. Doctors, trainers, and coaching staff, you know the people that know the actual situations, are prevented by federal laws and NCAA rules from commenting on injuries. People like Myron's "sources" are just engaging in random speculation, and most of the time they are wrong.

Now don't make me get out my number of projections/chance one is right chart.

FTB,

That's actually not 100 percent accurate. Doctors, trainers, coaching staff members, etc., can talk about the medical condition of a player if they have consent from the player (or the player's parents if the player is under 18).

My understanding is that most (if not all) players sign a waiver giving up HIPPA protection. Same goes with some educational records and FERPA.

Without such a waiver, a school/conference could never announce that someone is academic all-league or even print in the game program what their major is.

We also don't know who is the source for reporters. It is very possible that the source is someone who knows something.

FOT, do you know who Tipton is? He covers UK sports in Lexington KY. He bothered Tubby all the time as well as BCG and Cal. Tubby used to ignore the heck out of this guy.

Tubby as a veteran coach, is doing the same thing with some of these guys here (I have mentioned their names before). Therefore, they make up their own stories. Al had this and that. Al will be out for 6 weeks. Al may play against Akron. They are as bad as Tipton if not worse. They are very subjective and think they know more than the coaches.

I would have done the same thing if I were the coaches. Lets hope, along with the new facility, we get some good writers/reporters here at the U.

Go Gophers

Sure but I don't know him personally (of course). I do know Larry Vaught on the Danville KY paper.

Tipton has bothered every UK coach, not just recently. I don't see either local beat writer in the same light as Tipton. He's worse than either of them.

He (Tipton) is a poor replacement for DG Fitzmaurice, who was longtime Lex H-L sports writer.

Have to wonder what Tubby's motives are behind those statements and if he was, in fact, the person who started the plantar fasciitis rumors (later "leaked" to Myron from other sources).
