Minnesota has steadfastly refused to discuss the coaching search publicly, but a source with knowledge of the situation has told us that Hoke “is one of the second-tier candidates that will be given serious consideration [if rebuffed by A-list candidates].” The source declined to confirm who exactly resides on the Gophers’ “A-list” of candidates.

Hoke just moved up on my list after reading this, shows great character to address his team instead of not acknowledging the rumors that are flying around out there, lots of people would leave the players hanging. Straight shooter.
 

If he is a B candidate, I'd be interested in knowing who are there A candidates, given that by now, they should know exactly who is and is not interested in the job.

I'd be very happy with Hoke.

This assumes the source has any idea WTF they're talking about. And if they do, they should probably learn that its not good PR management to leak a potential hire as being on the B-List. Yes, everyone knows it anyway, but why say it yourself?

These are the types of "leaks" that are just extemely disappointing.

EDIT: I will take it one step further. Maturi needs to find out who this leak was and fire their ass immediately. Claiming we have "tiers" and that this great coach we would be lucky to get is "Tier 2" is beyond humiliating. This is a total disgrace.

It's downright idiotic. What if he ends up with the job? It's look really bad if you had to settle for someone on your "B-list".

Hey, if Hoke is half the guy they make him out to be, he looks at this as a challenge, not a rip. I'm even more fascinated by who the real "guy" is if a guy like Hoke isn't the guy...
 



We don't know that it was really a legit leak or someone who claimed to have more knowledge than they do. I wouldn't make too much of it.
 

Hoke didn't suggest anything other than there was a meeting

for all we know, Hoke could have told Maturi Minnesota is his plan B


but don't listen to me. I was fairly certain Maturi wouldn't speak directly with an in season coach. Good on ya Joel for getting at it
 

Interesting if true, that they're still hoping for a bigger name, say Patterson or Peterson, although I don't know that calling Hoke a second tier prospect benefits anybody involved.

Straight from Maturi regarding the idea of telling a candidate he's on the b-list (I emailed him and asked him):

"We would never communicate that to a coach even if true. We have candidates and are doing everything we can to determine the best coach for Minnesota. Joel Maturi"
 

I'm in agreement with the firings I think the AD and the source should loose their jobs. Too many important "leaks" at Biermann.

Thing is, we don't know where the leak came from or whether the person has any idea wtf they're talking about. Overall I think they've done a great job at keeping the process very quiet and leak free. The stuff that comes out is so vague and general plus a lot of it contradicts itself. In the end then its mostly worthless. Just the sort of background noise you get if a search is pretty well run.
 

If somebody wanted to torpedo Hoke, they didn't do a bad job.

Laughably, this is the probably craftiest PR move in Gopher football history.

I agree, this whole second tier/ B list thing sounds more like speculation by someone rather than actual knowledge.

People calling for the AD to be fired when we don't know the facts are jumping the gun just a tad.

It sounds like the " source" is nothing more than another member of the media profession. That term is what the media would characterize coaches. I give it no credence at all.
I was impressed with Hoke's action to level with his players. His honesty is admirable.
 

What leaks?!? Read the story again. It says that a source says that Hoke is a tier 2 candidate who will get serious consideration if no tier 1 guy is interested. Doesn't every person on this board already know this? Does anyone here consider Hoke a tier 1 guy? Of course not. Does anyone doubt he'd get consideration if there are no viable tier 1 candidates? Of course not. That part of the story could have been writen the day Brewster was fired. If there truly is a source, he's simply stating what everyone already knows - including Hoke.
 

By the way, I believe the original post is wrong. I don't remember seeing anything in the story that identified the source as a Minnesota official.

From the "for what it's worth" dept. From an inside source of an inside source, Hoke is your new coach.
 

If Bull$hit were money, there would be a lot of millionaires out there who are talking about this coaching search.
 

I think a lot of people are taking anything they read on the coaching search as gospel. 90% of what you read on messege boards is crap ( speculation ). A lot of the medias sources are messege boards like this. Oh, and so far, 22.5 posts on this thread are crap:)
 

Hoke would be a Great Hire. Here he went to San Diego State, a school that has no history of winning in Division One football. They have six years of recruiting only Two Star recruits. Who ever their coach was seven years ago brought in a lot of talent but those guys went on to the Pros. So this is a team of unknown undersized lower expectation kids and Hoke has them winning. They even played Missouri pretty hard before falling at the end. Hoke is a winner. If we hire him away, San Diego will collapse to its dismal normal fortune.

If we do hire Hoke, schedule San Diego for the next five years because they will be crappy for years.
