AFCA Names Fleck Region 3 Coach of the Year

University of Minnesota head football coach P.J. Fleck was named the AFCA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) Region 3 Coach of the Year today.

The AFCA annually recognizes five regional Coach of the Year winners in each of the Association’s five divisions. Fleck is joined by Clemson’s Dabo Swinney (Region 1), LSU’s Ed Orgeron (Region 2), Baylor’s Matt Rhule (Region 4) and Utah’s Kyle Whittingham (Region 5).

The five region winners will be honored at the American Football Coaches Awards on Tuesday, Jan. 14, during the 2020 AFCA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee. The AFCA will also announce the 2019 FBS National Coach of the Year the same day on the regional winners are finalists for National Coach of the Year.

This honor is just another one for Fleck after leading Minnesota to 10 regular season wins for the first time since 1905. Fleck was also voted the Big Ten’s Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year by his peers and is one of six finalists for the George Munger College Coach of the Year Award.

In addition to 10 regular-season wins, Minnesota won seven Big Ten games for the first time ever. Four of those Big Ten wins were by at least 20 points, which has not happened since 1934. Minnesota beat No. 5 Penn State at home and that was the first win for the Gophers against a Top 5 five team since it beat No. 2 Penn State on the road in 1999. It was Minnesota’s first home win against a Top 5 team since it beat No. 1 Michigan 16-0 in 1977.

The Gophers are ranked No. 16 in the AP Poll and were ranked as high as No. 7 this year, which was the team’s highest ranking since it was No. 5 on Nov. 19, 1962. Minnesota is ranked. No. 18 in the College Football Playoffs and was ranked as high as No. 8, which was its highest CFP ranking in school history.

Minnesota will play Auburn in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020. The game will mark the first meeting ever between the two schools and will also be Minnesota’s first-ever appearance in the prestigious bowl game. The Outback Bowl will be Minnesota’s first bowl game between two ranked teams since the 1961 Rose Bowl against Washington. Minnesota was ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, while Washington was No. 6.

Go Gophers!!

The Outback Bowl will be Minnesota’s first bowl game between two ranked teams since the 1961 Rose Bowl against Washington. Minnesota was ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, while Washington was No. 6.

I wonder if the U hired the same fact-checkers that P.J. uses for himself. This is an inaccurate statement. In the 2015 Citrus Bowl, the Gophers were 25th in the CFP while Missouri was ranked by all 3 major selectors.

Football writers always pretend that the AP poll is the only one that matters.

Terrific! Congrats Coach Fleck - one of the five top coaches in the nation - according to the coaches, and they should know!

I wonder if you know how to read the words AP poll

"The Outback Bowl will be Minnesota’s first bowl game between two ranked teams since the 1961 Rose Bowl against Washington."

Please point out where in the above sentence the words "AP poll" appear. Thanks in advance.

And the false press release still remains up at this moment, despite my tweet to them informing them of the error. I guess Fleck's fast-and-loose attitude toward the truth is pervading the athletic department.

Read the whole thing and get some context man.
They talk about the AP poll.

which to a literate person implies they are talking about the AP Poll

Literally the sentence right after that mentions the AP poll as the rankings for the game the sentence was referring to.

They don't explicitly cite a specific ranking, making it a false statement. Both teams were indeed ranked, again making it a false statement. Instead of "implying," they could just remove the false statement altogether, but then they couldn't puff their chests and claim more "first since" accomplishments that aren't true.

Cool. They could've just said "ranked in the AP poll" in the sentence, but they didn't. Hmm, wonder why that could be?

And, further, your statement is wrong, because they don't specify which ranking they're citing for Washington.

Ummm, because they expect you to read the next sentence...?

And are you honestly saying that the sentence should have read "Minnesota was ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, while Washington was No. 6 in the AP poll."???? Like seriously, any editor would tell you that you don't need the second specification.
