Trent Tucker was on KFAN this afternoon so I decided to call in. I asked him (1) if the MN bigs with the return of Trevor and improved rebounding could lead MN to a quicker paced offense a style of play conducive to the Hollins twins and certainly R. Williams, if MN can take care of the basketball; (2) if he would consider joining Tubby's staff and (3) whether he could assist in the recruitment of T Jones. While he didn't address the first question he interestingly said he'd be interested in joining the staff but has never been contacted. He added, whether boastingly or with inside information, that he could be a recruiting asset.

I say, why shouldn't Tubby contact TT? He's well connected in MN and basketball circles generally. While Flip might have the NBA coaching experience, TT has been more involved in basketball camps and developing local relationships.

As to the running game, my point was and is that not only do I think we can make a successful run at it, but it would be an asset in the recruitment of Tyus, who clearly prefers that style of offense as noted in his interviews.

Tubby won't want anyone to share the spotlight...it would be a great transition to give Tubby an extension contingent on some assistant coach changes and adding Trent would help recruiting

Under the hypothetical scenario under which Flip Saunders is the Gopher head coach, I think it's more than likely that double T would end up on his staff. Compared with someone like Jimmy Williams, Trent would be just as good a recruiter and at the same time have a better handle on coaching the game than JW.

I'm afraid that may be true.

Just curious as to why you think that...

Trent is 52, when was the last time he was involved in basketball? I liked the idea of having Trent on staff years ago, but I am not sure if he adds much now. Someone like Ronald "Chin" Coleman who is now at Nebraska seems like a better fit for Tubby's staff http://www.rocwithme.com/aau/assistant-coach-ronald-chin-coleman-host-group-recruits-nebraska. The problem is this type of coach (resume includes Whitney Young High School and the Mac Irvin Fire AAU program) is best served in the "Saul seat" on the bench until he gains more experience.

Maybe because he hasn't changed his staff much and one of his assistants is his kid. Plus Trent brings different credentials as a Gopher, NBA'er and has been popular locally for a long time.

A lot of coaches have their son as the film coordinator or something. I think it's unfair to judge Saul, though. For all we know he's probably a great coach. His first coaching job had nothing to do with Tubby. Saul was actually hired by Mike Sutton at Tennessee Tech. Saul had a pretty big role on the staff at Tennessee Tech after Sutton stepped down when he was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. As a player, he was also a 2 time starting point guard for Kentucky, won a national championship, and played in the D-League a couple of years. Saul's profile on Gophersports

I stand corrected, Saul is awesome. The progress this team has showed is more than I could have hoped for and the coaching is perfect

The last time Trent was a candidate for an assitant coaching position, he couldn't be one because he lacks a college degree. Has that changed?

Other than that question, I agree with exhiled in Duluth's comments in this thread.
