"Mit Shah, a New Jersey-born hotelier of Indian descent who served as vice chairman of the Wake Forest board of trustees, was sitting courtside Sunday night watching Wake Forest play Louisville when he questioned several of Hess’ calls during a late timeout. Shah said Hess responded, “When I’m older, I want to sit in your seat and watch your Egyptian ass ref a game.”"

"There’s also no question he allowed himself to become the focus of unwanted attention – most notably at N.C. State in 2012 when he inexplicably ejected Wolfpack legends Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta from their seats behind the scorer’s table."

Give him to the SEC! Nobody likes the SEC! Don't let him come to the B1G!

If those were the only 2 notable bad things that happened in his 20 years officiating, seems like a pretty lame reason to boot the guy.

The ejection of the NC State guys wasn't "inexplicable," just a dispute in judgment about whether their antics merited ejection. So he shouldn't have called Shah "Egyptian" but that's not exactly an incendiary slur ... could think of a lot worse that haven't gotten people fired. And when you've got thousands of people yelling at you over thousands of games, many right up close, are you really going to hold the ref to perfection? NBA refs banter with the fans all the time. Whole thing seems lame to me. I wonder if he was just a bad ref that they wanted to get rid of.

UMMM

"Hess had to go. There was no way around it.

Sunday’s incident, when he made an ethnic comment to a former Wake Forest trustee sitting courtside, was merely the latest in a long string of controversies involving Hess – a good ref with a bad temper.

"Since 2012, Hess had been dancing along a very thin line. Sunday, he crossed it.

The ACC’s best referees, guys like Mike Eades and Roger Ayers, are largely anonymous to all but hardcore fans. They make the right calls, maintain control and for the most part stay out of the way.

That was never Hess’ style. His ability to make the right call outweighed his intemperance for years. The ACC put up with his antics – enabled them, even – because of his skill as a referee, until he finally went too far and left the conference no choice.

If a ref has to remove a fan, they find the site manager at a timeout, explain what's going on, and let them deal with it. Not like this.
