A suspended Hawkeye running back, Adam Robinson, was charged with marijuana possession last night in Des Moines. He was a passenger in a car that was stopped by a state trooper.

KCCI.com has the story, which they posted a few minutes ago.

Go Gophers!!

Looks like there will be another opening @ runningback in IC.

When will the Iowa City police quit hatin' on the football team?

It must be interesting to be a running back recruit at Iowa. On one hand it is very likely you will get early playing time and the opportunity to produce in a solid, stable offense. On the other hand it is more likely you will be out of the program by the time your 20th birthday rolls around due to your leg being broken in half or your legal problems. ;)

All joking aside... like any situation where a young guy either gets injured or starts heading down the wrong path, I hope the he pulls himself together before he has a lifetime of regret (or worse).

This kid must be crazy. Always dumbfounding to see kids throwing their careers in the toilet.

A lifetime of regret? Heading down the wrong path? He got caught with a little pot. Let's not overreact here. Sure he was stupid to do it with the future in football he possibly had in front of him, but people who smoke pot certainly don't need to "pull themselves together before they have a lifetime of regret" as you put it.

No...he got it right. The difference between "heading down the wrong path" and "pull themselves together..." is about 2 decision.

This kid might be "heading down the wrong path". He has made some bad decisions, and those are being played out on a large stage. The difference is that if he does not change, he may be one of those guys you read about in 5 years who is in the position that they now need to pull themselves together and figure out their life.

Oh please, the kid smokes pot. You're making some awfully big assumptions.

I don't really consider every kid who is 21 and smokes pot to be throwing their life away, that really isn't Robinson's issue here. The issue is his stupidity in not recognizing his situation. He was going to school for free and was already in trouble (it is assumed for pot) and his career at Iowa was already in jeopardy and he continued to put himself into dumb situations. If this was Robinson's first run-in with trouble, it wouldn't be a big deal. The fact that the kid essentially just threw away a Big 10 football scholarship (starting job next year) on his 2nd-3rd strike on something that is completely avoidable, that makes it a lot worse.

I agree completely. I said earlier that he's an idiot for throwing away a scholarship to play football at a Big Ten university, it's a huge mistake on his part. But spare me the "needs to get his life straightened out" and "heading down the wrong path" comments. (I know it wasn't you who said them)

At the time of his suspension Ferentz seemed to hint that Robinson was having academic problems. Now he gets busted with some weed. Either by themselves wouldn't be a big deal, but the trend is troubling, and indicative of a possible problem. There is genuine cause for alarm, he may soon be, a former running back at Iowa.

When will Klondike Gopher Fan step in and defend him?

I will, at least.
First off, as far as I understand it, we don't know what if any issues (legal or otherwise) he had before this.
Second, the only mistake we know this kid made was getting caught (which is, indeed, a dumb mistake). Kids get stoned. Lots of them. In Minnesota as well as everywhere else. I, personally, have absolutely no problem with it. But no one wants to get caught, and a football player for Iowa has more to lose than others, so he should be especially careful about it.

You don't think a kid who is already on suspension from a team and has essentially been told that if he behaves himself that he will keep his scholarship isn't acting really dumb by getting caught for something like this?

This is more than some college kid smoking pot. This is a college kid on a full ride scholarship to play Big 10 football (and probably start) who is currently suspended that essentially threw away his scholarship.

It's less to do with the act of smoking pot and much more to do with the timing of when he did this.

you are right, but unfortunately, look at the number of posters on here whose lax standards would easily lead them in the same mistaken direction.

Bob_Loblaw, you are the Babe Ruth of the board these days. Everything is landing out of the park.

It's more about the context than the act. Nothing wrong with a little herb now and then, but like booze or spending too much time on the internet, things can go too far fairly easily. Robinson needs some help and hopefully the Iowa football community can get behind him and hopefully Robinson will accept the assistance.
