Of all the west coast teams now in the Big Ten, Wasington is the one I’d like to see become a rival.
No hate, just honest competition with another team and fan base much like our own.

Minnesota is Washington’s 12th most played opponent of all time.

1) Oregon 105
6) USC 87
7) UCLA 77
12) Minnesota 17
14) Michigan 15
16) Ohio state 12
18) Illinois 11
19) Purdue and Nebraska tie 10

Wild that the new big ten actually contains 9 of their top 20 played opponents.

Just don't bring up the 1960 National Championship till after the game. Won the National Title that year, but lost to them in the Rosebowl after the National Title was awarded.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Especially since all of this occurred before I was born.

Was a really important game in college football history

Before that, the national title was awarded at end of regular season and bowl games were exhibitions. After the game what the post season in college football was really changed.

I am seriously considering taking a week (or more) off of work and doing a road trip through some national parks and ending up in Seattle for the Gophers game at Washington next season. This trip would include our tailgate gear and reserving a spot there for the game. We did the same thing for the Gophers white out game at Penn State a few years back and had a blast.

Still happened a couple times after as well. Alabama was named national champions in 1964 and 1973, but lost their bowl games (Orange and Sugar respectively). Happened a decade prior, too, Oklahoma won in 1950 but lost the Sugar Bowl.

Although we don't play the Huskies again until next year and again in 2027. It'll be the first game against Washington since 1977. Minnesota leads the series 10-7.

If history proves anything the Oregon game may be a barn-burner. All four games with the Ducks have been decided by 7 points or less, with three decided by 4 points or less.

Washington is Minnesota’s 14th most played opponent.
The only non big ten opponents they’ve played more than Washington are:

11) Iowa state 23
12) Chicago 18

15) Pittsburg 12 (the next one after Washington is why I included them)

18) USC 9
19) Maryland 8
34) Oregon UCLA and Rutgers tie 4

Oh I thought it had changed by the mid 60s

But upon looking it up,

AP changed to doing it after bowl games after the 1965 season
UPI changed after 1973 season (coaches poll)

3 teams have official ncaa sanctioned claims to national titles in 1964 (Alabama, Arkansas, and Notre dame).

Football writers association of America awarded after bowl games starting in 1954

Have enough rivals and an extra trophy game that is not needed.

I agree, but not all rivalries involve trophies. Some are because of what once was or now is at stake. IIRC Michigan and Ohio State just play for bragging rights and at one time it was pretty much whoever won that game was champions and the participant in the Rosebowl.

Love the post.

Might quibble with fan base much like our own. They have a much larger and more invested fan base than the Gophers.

They are kinda the best proof point that the whole, “Oh the Gophers are competing with other sports” argument is BS

I'd rather it be USC. Same colors. Storied historical programs with multiple Natties :ROFLMAO: .
Way more fun to beat them vs the other Pac squads

Sure. When their fans come to town, we can throw those stupid Washington Red Delicious apples at them and mock them, as those apples are neither red, nor delicious.

I really do think if Kalen DeBoer stayed at Washington there would've been a budding rivarly building with him recruiting Minnesota heavily (and still is with Rudy Voss) due to his ties to the area.

That is the story and since they already won the national championship the Gopher coaches and players vacationed more than they practiced, which was the accepted way for a Rose Bowl exhibition game.

The Huskies were so certain they won the 1960 national championship they waited 47 years to ‘claim’ it in 2007.
