Are there any hater free thoughts?

As has been stated, I think getting Theret back will have a noticeable effect on the D.

What else?

losing 100-0 will shut up the remaining brewster supporters.

As much as I don't want to be negative, I don't think Theret will help that much. I can see USC putting up 40+ regardless. Best case scenario is a driving rain storm so USC can not pass (at least not as easily).

Sorry, but the D is just too young and inexperienced.

Big Surprise - several guys who started posting here on Saturday afternoon have nothing positive to say.

Unfortunately, as a fan who has been engaged for a long time (as opposed to having been enraged for 2 days), I'm not sure that I have a lot of positives to offer either.

I really do think the defense will play better. Having said that, USC obviously has much better athletes on its 2nd and 3rd string than the USD starters.

If the offense can play without a lot of big mistakes and if we are not put into a position of being one-dimensional on offense, that will take a lot of pressure off the D. If there is one simple message that the coaches can instill in the young D it would be to not over-persue and to keep at least 2 DBs in a contain frame of mind (it helps a lot here to get Theret back). IF the team can do these things, I think that they can keep this game from becoming an embarrassment.

I know a lot of people are looking at this game as a "must win," but I don't think that's fair to the players and coaches. I think the situation we're in now is that this team CANNOT humiliate itself again this Saturday and then has to take it one week at a time.

I would consider the first two responses "hater" responses given the title of the post:

"losing 100-0 will shut up the remaining brewster supporters."
"Fire Tim "the Incompetent and Unqualified" Brewster NOW!"

It has nothing to do with being blind or not. This Saturday, the Gophers have a game, with the current staff - like it or not, and I'm pretty sick of playing the Fire Him Now game.

I was hoping any other posters on this board are interested in something other than getting their panties in a bunch and screaming for the head of Tim Brewster. There are enough threads for that.

It's time to see if we can learn anything from the debacle of last Saturday and move forward as best we can.

Well, this thread got quickly hijacked by the 'hater-come-latelies'. Welcome. Maybe we'll see you again the next time something ridiculously bad happens to the Gophers.

Anyways, I think Theret back and calling the signals should improve things a little in secondary, but probably not enough. USC has some big, physical receivers that I can't imagine are a very good matchup with lil' Kyle. Any word on Royston for next week yet?

My other Hatorade-free thoughts/questions include:

1) How will the Gophers O-line matchup with the USC's front 4? I'd anticipate we'll be passing a ton, so can Burris, Carufel, Ed-O (or Alford, I guess), Bunders, and Wills give Weber as much time to throw as he had against SD?

2) How much wacky stuff will be pulled out of the playbook for this game? Will we see some wildcat with MarQueis? Onside kick to open game/2nd half? Reverses, hook & ladders, Statue of Liberties, etc.?

3) How destructive was the loss to SD on the pscyche of the team? Can they pull themselves up from this latest setback, and give us a decent performance? However, at this point, I'm not sure how to define 'decent performance'.

I guess they are having some issues with their starting left end on D. They are starting Armstead, and a lot of people at USC thinks he should not see the field.

big woot, this season is over for wins, basketball can't come soon enough

Nice try, UU, but you over-estimate your fellow man. Lot of veteran posters here who are still shocked, disillusioned, and angry so the first two replies to your post are no surprise. But I can take the negativity from the veterans; whereas most of the stuff from the new people has an adolescent tone to it that's sort of like fruit flies. Annoying as hell, hard to get rid of, but of no substance.

As for USC, I guess I'm looking for a game like the Cal game last year. Don't expect us to win, but I really think we'll get our hopes up well into the game.

The team should be pissed and embarrassed. Too early for them to have quit on themselves and the coaches. They'll play with real desperation.

On the flip side, I'm counting on USC to come in arrogant as hell. No matter what their coaches tell them, how can they take us seriously? Eventually, they'll get serious and their speed will be the difference just like Cal last year, but I think we'll have given them a game.

We can't give up an early long touchdown or have an early critical turn-over. Then all bets are off. As long as I can determine the game, not sure I would want a big play from us early either.
Don't wake them up, but just hang around with them until the second half and give us our one in ten chance to steal it.

Bottom line: I'll be upset if the team doesn't learn from this.

It's over, it happened. Things may play out and a new coach may be here to start 2011, but that's a long ways off. All the players & coaches can do is focus on Southern Cal & prepare as well as possible for the game on Saturday.

Positives:
-Barkley isn't a runner. Granted, I'm scared to death of him attacking our defensive backfield, but the images of a QB running around the end with nobody on the side of the field to stop him shouldn't be refreshed in my mind this week.
-Offense: Bennett another 100 yards. And despite all the hate, I didn't think Weber played awful. With SC's secondary being their weak spot, there may be some opportunities to make some plays.
-Penalties: Gophers didn't do as good a job as they did at MTSU, but Southern Cal makes the Gophers discipline look like it's straight from the Bud Grant school of coaching. Play smart & some things may work out.

Everyone's expecting the worst, and that's why a win wouldn't shock me in the least. Learn from the mistakes, get over the USD loss immediately, and let's keep playing the 2010 season.

Think about that statement really hard and don't break something.

(1) Whether we have another 100 yard rushing performance (if we do, this would be a great indicator for our offense heading into the Big Ten season).

(2) Whether the defense improves in any way (having a few sacks, covering slants, covering deep balls, covering QB runs, etc.).

I've had my share of meltdown posts the last few days, but this thread is a good one for my frame-of-mind. Whether Brew is coaching next year or not, if we see some of the above improvements I'll feel better about our future.

Not ready for it yet. I'm past anger, but not quite positive yet.

3) How destructive was the loss to SD on the pscyche of the team? Can they pull themselves up from this latest setback, and give us a decent performance? However, at this point, I'm not sure how to define 'decent performance'.

That's the biggest thing for me. How does the team respond? Do we come out flat and get down big right away because we're still so down from the game last week? Or do we come out pissed off and determined to play well?

This game is very critical in how the rest of the season goes. If we play bad and get blown out, then many guys may cash it in already. But play well (even if we lose), then I think we still have a chance to turn things around.

I don't know how much I believe we will turn things around, but being positive is the best thing for me right now.

I'm not saying it will be a difference maker, but USC is 119th in penalty yards.

USC is probably focused right now...nothing worse then losing to a team that lost to friggin' South Dakota...

USC can be counted on to be unfocused an lay an egg once a year. Unfortunately they usually do it in PAC-10 game.

So does OSU, maybe we can catch them slipping...

I'll take a 2-9 season if it means beating OSU, lol...

Nice post UU - wallowing in self pity is beyond old already. The insessant bitching is not going to change anything anyway. Let's take a mulligan.

My thoughts on the game this Saturday.

1) People are treating USC as if they are at a level we have never seen before. Don't think that is the case.
2) Matt Barkley is still very young so maybe he makes a couple of mistakes in a hostile environment (if what's left of our fan base doesn't decide to cower at home). Maybe our captain Kirksey can rise to the occasion, push the pocket and keep this pure pocket passer off his game.
3) I'm quickly developing a lot of faith in Jeff Horton to gameplan something effective. We fell behind so fast last week that we didn't run a lot of smashmouth, which was ok because the passing game was effective. If the same thing happens this week, guessing we'll stay more with the run game to keep the inexperienced D off the field.
4) One of the very young DEs absolutely needs to blossom in this game. It could happen.
5) No doubt that the intensity level will be off the charts. That may actually cause some problems, but it should be interesting.
6) South Dakota was looking forward to our game since it was put on the schedule. Now comes a game that this program has been looking forward to just as long.

My prediction - close game, could go either way. Gophers 28-24. Stoudermire finally returns one for a TD.

Go Gophers
