A look at Indiana's addition to their football stadium

They are finishing up construction to enclose one end of their stadium. The end result does not change the overall seating capacity but does make for a more intimate feel. Out of all the Big 10 stadiums I felt that Indiana's Memorial Stadium had the best overall sightlines.

I see there will still be a chance for the fallen autumn leaves to form swirling vortices in that south end. Geesh - I'll always remember that, and what an egg we laid that Halloween day. Oh, that and your "girlfriend" at the park entrance hut.

Always fun in Bloomington

For the Love of God it was windy that day. Cupito threw that pick 6 and it was Katy-bar-the-door from that point on. Have yet to see a win in my 2 trips to Bloomington. Oh yeah, that quasi-Ranger Rick chick manning the entrance to the Kentucki - ana state park resort  x 100.

That looks like a nice addition and update of their stadium. I like the classy but modern look of that new "tower" building in the end zone.

It also gives us a good perspective of just what we are getting with TCF Bank Stadium. In a very respectful way, I can say that in terms of facilities we are no longer anywhere near to the same category as Indiana University.

Myles, you can see that pic was taken in the first quarter

Maybe Indiana's cougar crowd has the same reputation as being late-arriving as the Badger's student section. ;)

I'm sure the Ohio State, Michigan, and Purdue fans appreciate that Indiana added those seats. Basically, fans from those three schools are the ones who will be using them.

"Defend the Rock"

Anyone know what the significance of this is and what's up with the big rock?

I don't understand this. How could it not increase the seating capacity?

I was wondering the same thing. Perhaps they removed the temporary bleacher seating in the opposite endzone?

There hate coach Terry Heppener basic put a big chunk of Indiana Limstone in the northend zone then nicknamed Memorial Stadium "the rock" and proceded to steal Clemson idea of touching the rock before the team runs out on the field.

In other words its a new weak forced tradition that really doesn't mean anything.

Seeing those pics sure makes me happy that we added the brick to the lower level ring around the field

Nice looking addition! Looks like a pretty cool stadium and the addition adds some old looking class to it.

I think this is a nice addition to Memorial stadium at Indiana. Overall the seating capacity is about the same as TCF (actually a tad more) but until this addition was made, it always looked like a big high school stadium. Forming a nice horseshoe makes the whole thing look like a much better college stadium. A real classy change/addition in my opinion.

Also, seeing someone else's "new toy" helps put some things into perspective. For example, behind those endzone windows is what is billed as the "largest weightroom in college football" which I'm sure has everyone there convinced the recruits will now flock to Indiana. Thinking of ourselves, the beautiful locker room and recruiting room at TCF get a lot of attention and gushing comments but without a full scale "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" effort by the entire program... will be little more than Indiana's weight room. The good news is this is exactly what appears to be happening with our program. I'm just saying the whole has to be bigger than the sum of the parts in this case.

I'm pretty sure capacity increased from 51,000 to 53,000 even after taking down the bleachers in the now open end.

Railings

If you look closely you will see that Indiana had to add railings in the new sections of seating while the old sections still do not have any railings helping you up and down the steps. I know this is a newer rule for stadium construction. I really hope the railings at TCF don't block any views.

I have to say, having that weight room looking out on the field, is pretty sweet.

OOOH Concrete

So drab, so cold, so concrete. More concrete that's a nice touch. He takes the rock from Clemson and the Weigh Room from West Virginia. How original. This is about as appealing as a parking garage.

It's hard to tell from the pictures, but are the windows for the weight room close enough to the field that players might trip/run into them if they are running full speed through the end zone?

We sound like the Iowans trashing TCF. It's a great addition to Memorial Stadium. Illinois remodeled. Iowa remodeled. Michigan is remodeling. Gotta keep up with the rest of the country.

I've always liked Indiana's stadium and Indiana is one of my favorite road trips. I think the addition adds a lot of class to the old concrete stadium. The exterior looks great with the limestone and the towers and arches, it's a classy upgrade and it blends in very well with the rest of the existing stadium.

I am happy for them. It is a great improvement, i think. I just hope it inspires more crimson and cream to show up, instead of just OSU, Mich, and Purdue fans.

Yho Maximus

Its a less than pleasing addition. Indiana is nice campus. Some nice buildings. It has no sense of design, no flow, no compliment to the bowl. It appears they left it to the local cement contractor.

Are we looking at the same pictures? To me it looks very nice and really gives the stadium a more legit status. And if you look at pictures of empty stadiums across the country they all have a lot of exposed concrete.

Nobody will ever agree 100% with any other single person (just ask my wife, for example!). So, with that being said I tend to agree with a lot of your points husker but I am going to take a pass on this one. I think it is a fantastic addition to Indiana's stadium. I think it has an incredible sense of design, adds a lot of class, perfect flow between the previously unattached grandstands, and not only a perfect compliment to the bowl... but it in fact it MAKES it a bowl.

They're railings...we're talking maybe 2.5 inches in diameter. That's not going obstruct anything. :)

I think the addition really helps the look of their stadium. That tower has a real Gothic cathedral feel to it.

It does look great

from the inside and good for them. From the outside it still has that unfinished division 3 high school look.
That said, good for them and it helps the Big Ten in the long run.

Go Gophers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
