Is this the third time the Gophers were a legitmate choice to go to San Antonio? When were the other two?

I only remember 2003, when Michigan St (who beat the Gophers, but had a worse record) went and laid an egg against Nebraska. The Gophers ended up playing a classic against Joey Harrington, Sami Parker, and the Oregon Ducks in the Sun Bowl. Rhys Lloyd hit a FG to win it.

1999: We finish with the same record as Penn State, beat them head-to-head, and the Nits end the year on a three-game losing streak, but they take PSU citing "How often do you get a chance to get a program the stature of Penn State?" (As it turns out, a few years later).

2003: We finish with a better record than Michigan State, and could've renewed an old rivlary with Nebraska, but they take Sparty citing their head-to-head win.

2006: We finish with the same record as Iowa, beat them head-to-head, and end the year on a three-game winning streak compared to Iowa's three-game losing streak, but they take Iowa because of the traveling reputation.

Mason's last year and last year, presumably.

EDIT: nm, others have clarified (and correctly).

Get over it, guys. The Gophers can't even fill there own brand spanking new stadium in its first year. Right now there are very few teams in BCS conferences that are less attractive than the Gophers for a bowl game in Texas. The Gophers are going to have to earn the kind of respect that you think they already deserve.

It wouldn't be a big deal if they hadn't screwed them over so many times in the past. I think that a 9-3 squad in 2003 was "deserving"

People remember '03, but that was the Gophers weakest case for the Alamo Bowl. Lose at home to the team they choose ahead of you and you have no valid argument. That '03 team never should have been in the position to go to the Alamo Bowl because it should have been playing in January. The years where they had identical records and won the head to head match-ups are the years where the Alamo Bowl screwed the Gophers.

San Antonio sucks; would rather visit Phoenix. More importantly, Gophs just need a win. Texas Tech will travel well and play a home game at the Alamo. So, maybe this worked out ok.
