I know a few guys who went and played D1 ball across the country and wanted to offer a hypothetical scenario to see what you would do and why...

~ You are a 17 soon turning 18 year old "middle tier" prospect from Blahville Minnesota.
~ It is fall now, you have quit football to concentrate on basketball.
~ You played on a decent AAU team over the summer and got some offers from some okay D1 teams and one good team from across the country really likes you. (see below for teams)
~ Your high school team has a good chance to make a deep run in the State playoffs and you feel fully refreshed and believe you can still impress those who watch you.
~ You have not been offered by your "hometown favorite" the Gophers. They have a roster spot that you fit and would be a dream to play at Williams Arena.
~ You scored a 26 on the ACT and are still choosing a major to pursue.
~ You are not a Mormon and going on a mission trip or anything like that
~ Your parents and friends have been hounding you, well not really but it feels like it/just like every other kid that age, about where you are going to go for school.
~ JUCO is being tossed out of this equation.

Your current offers are (and have a good role for your skillset): Holy Cross, Nebraska Omaha, UW-Green Bay, Marist, & Sacred Heart

Your current offers are (iffy on role, new coach,): Bradley, & George Mason)

Other teams that have shown interest but can't gauge: Western Michigan, Creighton, Colorado State, Iowa, Davidson,

What Do You Do?

Do you make the verbal commitment to relieve the pressure?
Do you wait until the season starts to see what others that you have played with do?
Do you wait until the last minute to try to maximize your stock?

Remember, the longer you wait, the more the risk rises-- you could get hurt, you could suck, you could get burnt out from the pressure....

What would you do in this scenario? Explain why you chose what you did, and if you select one of the current offers, why that one and not one of the others.

Wait until the spring to see if you can pick up bigger offers.

It depends what the kid wants - does he want to play at the biggest name possible? If so, wait until Spring and hope he has a good senior year. As we see every year, kids offers get better and better in late Spring as teams scramble to fill open scholarships.

If the goal is to get a good education paid for, play D1 hoops and a solid degree I'd look strongly at Bradley or George Mason. I wouldn't worry about the ambiguity of the situation too much because turnover is the norm on rosters so a perceived role now will certainly change before said kid steps foot on campus.

Options are good.

Go Gophers!!

I would always favor one of the schools Who first started to recruit me and showed the most interest in me from the get go of my high school career . That would honestly mean alot to me if I was being recruited.

If I was really athletic with poor technique/skills I would hold out for better offers.

If I had realistically maxed out my shooting/dribbling etc and was a borderline overall athlete I would retake the SAT and go to an Ivy League school.

Class of 2013 or 2014?

It all depends on your goals. If you want to play for the biggest name, you wait as long as you can. Some offers may get pulled as a result of team's rosters becoming full, but it seems like some mediocre players get big offers if they wait (Osenieks, Ahanmisi, Armelin, etc.). Obviously, not everyone wants to do that, though. I would never want to have that big of a burden on my shoulders halfway through my senior year.

Also, I'd send film and my schedule out to some local schools and maybe a couple Ivies (you could probably get in as an athlete with a 26 ACT).

It sounds like location doesn't matter? It sounds like the school education doesn't matter? What matters is who is the most prestigious basketball program to offer? I don't think that's the best determining factor.

What are your strengths as a player? How do your strengths fit that program? What's the roster look like at your position? How bad does the recruiting coach want you? How much do you feel you can trust the guy? You are going to spend four years of your life there together in a perfect scenario.

Somebody wise once said something along the lines of...look at all the schools recruiting you...at what level are the biggest number at...throw out the bottom level...throw out the top level...pick the one from the majority level/group that you like the best because you will get playing time and have the opportunity to ascend. Versus wondering if you could have played higher at the bottom level and possibly struggling and not getting playing time at the top level because you are in over your head.

Like someone else said. Mailing highlight videos does work if you have ability. Costs money and you need to follow up to make sure it doesn't get lost....inform them it's coming etc. Best if dad or a brother or someone other than you communicates.

There are million decision points and each one is different for each person. Make a checklist. If I lived in Minnesota and could play a little. My criteria would be schools like Pepperdine, FIU, already forgot the school the USC coach Enfield was at...etc etc Schools with awesome weather and girls in shorts. lol Then academics. Then basketball. But gotta be able to fit into the playing style and like the coach...agree it's complicated. Overall point: you can't rush the decision. You'll know if a perfect offer comes.
