per MLive.com:
When TCF Bank Stadium opened in 2009, it became the newest Big Ten Conference football stadium since 1960, according to gophersports.com. It was the Big Ten’s first new stadium since Indiana’s Memorial Stadium opened. It’s the fourth stadium used by Minnesota’s football team, joining Northrop Field, Memorial Stadium and the Metrodome. With Michigan State playing at Minnesota Saturday night, here are some things you might not have known about the Big Ten’s youngest stadium:
Building it
According to Minnesota’s athletic website, the stadium was built at a cost of $288.5 million although other reports put the figure at $303 million. It was constructed using 8,800 tons of structured steel, 24,000 cubic yards of cast-in-place concrete and 740,000 bricks.
The stadium was originally proposed in 2000 to get the football team back on campus, the state approved building it in April 2006 and the groundbreaking took place in September of the same year. The Golden Gophers played their first game at TCF Bank Stadium on Sept. 12, 2009, beating Air Force 20-13.
