Last night during the player introductions every SFA starter shook the hands of the refs and Tubby. Through the years I've seen a couple of other teams do it and I think it makes a lot of sense. As we know, the little gestures in life can be important social lubricants and since refereeing is a human process, creating a little bit of goodwill at the start of the game doesn't hurt. More importantly, it's a nice thing to do. Maybe it is something the gophers should consider.

Anyone remember a game years ago against either: The Pilipino or Puerto Rican National team? We still had Miles Tarver on the squad. Anyhoo, Both National Anthems were performed. There was a large crowd for the visting team that night. Their fans really got into their anthem-I mean really sang their hearts out. Our crowd responded with a emotional rendition (biggest crowd support I have ever heard) of the Star Spangled Banner. A gift exchange by both teams followed. I remember commenting that I had never seen such a positive display of sportsmanship before any game in memory. Flash-forward to about five minutes into the game. Miles Tarver gets tangled-up with a opponent and things got weird fast. A couple of minutes later: Brawl. Both benches emptied. Punches thrown. Players ejected. Our new guy, Clark I believe, was ejected without ever doing a thing. So much for goodwill that night..

HA! The story afterward is about a sexual harassment suit against Steve Phillips. The more things change the more they stay the same. That is pretty classic.

In Washington state, shaking hands/bumping fists with the refs during introductions is standard procedure. I wouldn't mind seeing that happen here more often (I have seen a couple of HS teams do it, but they are very much the exception).

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who laughed at the Steve Phillips story coming on right afterwards.
