per the Cleveland Plain Dealer, a Q&A with Joe from the STrib:
3. Minnesota went 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the Big Ten last season and played in the Texas Bowl. That came after an 8-2 start that included wins over Nebraska and Penn State. How much of the good last year was real and can be carried over into this season?
I don't think it was smoke and mirrors. Northwestern and Nebraska were both banged up, and the Gophers caught a break on an Indiana turnover at the end of that win. But when you reel off a four-game Big Ten winning streak – the first one here since 1973 – with two of those wins on the road, you're doing something right. Most of the offense is back, except Nelson and leading receiver Derrick Engel. On defense, they lost two NFL draft picks in Ra'Shede Hageman and Brock Vereen, but I think they'll be good defensively again.
