There was an appreciation dinner tonight at the stadium for the band and spirit squads.

BBCT is my favorite Trophy.

GO GOPHERS!!!

It's really too bad we don't have the axe to go with the pig, jug, and BBCT. Hopefully someday we'll have all four trophies.

Legend has it that the axe cut down the tree that was used to make that chair.

For the trophy to really get some momentum, Nebraska needs to win it. Sounds kind of backward but if we really want it to become a thing, it's gotta visit both teams.

Yes.

These things all need to happen for it to stick:
1. Gophers need to keep it on the sideline at the game.
2. Nebraska needs to win
3. Nebraska needs to go get the trophy on the sideline and then take it home with them.

I don't know if all this will happen, but I hope it does (someday)

If given the choice of beating Nebraska until the end of eternity or having a new trophy I guess I'll choose the former.

Whoa, whoa, WHOA!
Are you crazy? Keeping a trophy on the sidelines? Don't you realize the danger that would entail?
No, I think it should be kept locked up in the locker room and handed over quietly after the game. :p

What are the two trophies on the left?

Our 1960 National championship trophy or the second place trophy from the Outback bowl.

I say we have Goldy sneak it to the back of the Nebraska bench just before our 3rd Nebraska victory in row. Then the Gophers can rush the bench to reclaim it. Consider it good practice for when we rush the Vadger bench this year to reclaim our axe.

I am quite happy for the question of what happens to the BOBC trophy when Nebraska beats Minnnesota to be moot for quite as long as possible.

Really...another invented, meaningless trophy like the Governor's Bell? These trophies are getting to be like x-games sports, you know, power distance walking, floor tiddlywinks, water dodgeball. How about we battle for the Clam with Maryland? Or the Thornton Melon with Northwestern? Or the Hickory Stick with Indiana?
Give the stupid chair trophy to Mariano Rivera and let's just stay with Floyd, the Axe and the Jug.

It might be invented, but how it came to be makes a great story!!!

KEEP THE $5BBOC Trophy!!!!

I think you are lacking the historical context for how this came about. The trophy was in now way made up by the athletics department, BIG Ten or the NCAA like the others you mentioned. It was started by Goldy and a comedic twitter handle in a similar manner as the Jug...You want it? Come play for it. Floyd was "invented" based on a bet between Governors and the Axe was "invented" to replace the lost Slab of Bacon (which Wisconsin found, holds onto, and belongs to us). I see that the $5Bits of Broken Chair trophy fits nicely in the criteria of the others stated.

This is the sort of thing that drives football fans crazy:

CyHawk[1].jpg

The Cy-Hawk Trophy is Document A in why we should not allow non-football fans into the Trophy process. Crazy!

The chair is the opposite of the bell. Nebraska and Minnesota had a long history, before they joined the Big Ten, Nebraska was the non-conference opponent the Gophers had played the most. Penn State and Minnesota had never even played once before they played for the Bell. The Bell was designed by university presidents, the chair was created by the mascots. The best traditions aren't created in boardrooms.

I agree with you 100%. As stupid as it is, the chair actually has a story behind it.

Three cheers for the Bits of Broken Chair Trophy!!!

:clap::cheer::cheer::cheer::clap:

Best trophy created in the last 50 years by any college in the country. It was created by mascots/fans and had zero official recognition from either university(still doesn't). I agree their fans won't be totally on board if they don't win it and bring it home, but it can stay in MN for another year as far as I'm concerned :D

Just to emphasize our long history with Nebraska, we've played 55 games with them. That's more than a third of the rest of the B1G: Ohio State (51), Michigan State (46), Penn State (13), Maryland (1) and Rutgers (0).

So now we're letting Goldy Gopher decide what is a trophy game and what its trophy should be? I love Goldy as much as the next fan but I think he should stick to spinning his head around.
Traditions like "real trophies" aren't created because some frustrated design student thinks we "need one" and glues some arts and crafts project together in his basement. They're created genuinely and they're made to last. Which is why no one accepts this contrived piece of kindling.

Then again, Pet Rocks made millions...

Having Goldy decide is better than you deciding. But Goldy isn't "deciding" anything - like it or not, the chair is popular. It's the fans who have decided. If "no one accepted it" we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Didn't the Apple guy get his start in his parent's basement or garage?
That worked out OK if I'm not mistaken.

The trophy was first designed by fans on reddit, Goldy copied one of their designs and built the real thing after it really picked up steam on twitter/reddit and other sites. So some parts of the college football fan base were very much involved in the creation of the trophy.

Yup.

Link I don't know if you can see the "flair" if you're not logged in. The flair identifies what team the poster identifies with. It's not just Minnesota and Nebraska fans weighing in on this. If you look around reddit/r/cfb (a great read, btw) Goldy is by far the most popular mascot, and the $5BOBC has taken on a life of its own.
