I am linking this article because this recruit wants to play both sports and that is one of the attractions with the U:

Brewster, who van der Wal's father said discovered his son on a YouTube video highlight, isn't selling only himself. Other programs are giving van der Wal that option, but Brewster used sophomore wide receiver Bryant Allen as an example. Allen was a reserve point guard on Smith's basketball team last season.

"Playing two sports in college would be hard," van der Wal said. "But it's real cool that coach Tubby encourages football players to come and try out for basketball. Basketball is something I really love."

Van der Wal's doctors have told him he's still growing and could be 6-8 soon — and possibly even taller in college. His athletic ability (32-inch vertical), length and hands could make van der Wal a standout tight end at the next level, Lemming said.

If he decides on the Gophers, he'd be a nice F addition to a class (2011) with only 2 scholarships, both for G probably.

I'm really holding out hope we have more than 2 schollies available, and I know that sounds mean, but I've seen at least one incoming frosh who I'd trade for Coleman, Tharpe, or Ogie straight up. I wouldn't be saddened at all to see some major attrition after next season. I know it's premature, but I really want all three of those guys.

Every team could use a Matt Trannon-type to bring some physical play and 5 extra fouls. But rarely does a FB player actually contribute on the basketball team - many more claim interest in it and make plans to do it than actually follow through with it.

Trannon was a basketball player who played football. He took FB scholarship at Mich St. That saved a basketball scholarship for someone else.

I just posted a story on Dillon van der Wal, a 6-foot-7 tight end from Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian, who wants to play both sports in college.
