I just noticed how GOD awful Austin has been on his 3's in the last 10 games!
Austin is shooting 31% 42 of 134 on the year now. In the last 10 games he is 7 for 47 or 7.5%!!

Coleman is shooting 32% on 3's, 8 of 25 on the season. In the last 10 games 2 for 8=25%.

Rodney is 2 for 14 in the last 10= 14%
Welch is 3 for 7 in those games. 43%
Mav is 7 for 12 in those games. 58%
Dre is 20 for 57 = 35%

I hadn't realized Austin's 3pt shot had fallin off that badly. Just as Tubby had Oto running plays to get him 3pt shots when he can barely hit rim, Tubby is still running Austin off multiple screens to get him outside looks? This is beyond a shooting dry spell.

1. I am glad Austin is trying to drive more to score in other ways.
2. I am glad Dre has played some off the ball so he can look to score more.
3. Tubby needs to find a way to get Mav and Welch on the floor more often to get 3pt shots, especially as teams double Trevor more and more.
4. We beat Indiana shooting the 3 horribly but we killed them on the boards. Can we keep playing and starting with Dre being the only one who can hit this shot. When will the box and one start...right?

Thanks for crunching the numbers, but the solution isn't for Austin to stop shooting. The last thing we need is one less threat from the outside. The idea is to get him back on track, which probably means for him to shoot his way out of the slump. We all know he's better than this.

I agree with this. Austin absolutely has to keep shooting. He's a good enough shooter that he's likely due to have a hot streak here soon. In the first five Big Ten games he was 16-for-31 = 52%.

Incidently, he has missed his last 13 attempts from 3pt range. Hasn't made one since the Iowa game in Iowa City.

It's amazing how bad shooting and a losing streak can coincide. Austin is a good, not great, shooter, when he is on. Despite being so off, I am still impressed that he takes so few bad shots. Agreed, he needs to shoot his way out of it. I like him going to the basket, but I am also not seeing him be timid with the three. If it is in the offense and he is open, he still takes it. They will fall again.

I've noticed, he's in an absolutely brutal stretch right now. But the worst thing he can do is just not shoot. It would bog down our offense even more if he's not pulling the trigger on his open looks. It's not like he's forcing things, it's just not going. Just wait, he'll pop off one of those Northwestern games where he hits like five or six. He's definitely due. Plus, even if he is missing, we need those offensive rebounds to produce points haha

I don't care if he misses his shots..as long as he is taking the right shot our rebounding will get us points on 1/3 of his misses and he makes a quarter he shoots...that is still very effective...it is the bad shots in transition or the when we have 4 guys standing outside the arc that can't happen.

We are not a shoot and score team...we are a shoot, rebound, shoot rebound, shoot get fouled team. Play to our strengths....keep shooting and rebounding.

Coleman is shooting the 3 better on the season than Austin right now. I agree that if Austin is in the flow of the offense and open he should keep shooting. I differ with Tubby in that when a player is this cold to run plays to get him open 3pt looks may not be in his best interest and it may be better to use Dre in that spot with Mav or Welch feeding him. I would not start Coleman and Rodney together. I would bring coleman and his scoring off the bench. I don't know that our offensive rebounding will be enough to make a post season run. You have to get a 2nd 3pt shooter on the court even if you have to give a little on defensive matchups.

I'll give Austin lots of credit for not letting his long range shooting woes affect his entire game. He is still defending at a high level and doing many of the little things that we have come to expect from him. He just needs to get one to drop...and then maybe a couple more, to get some confidence back. I think he'll be fine.
I like the the usual starting lineup. Joe is our best finisher around the rim and he should get some opportunities against Nebraska.

Thing about Austin missing so many lately...we still managed to win 3 of those games he struggled in...It bodes well for when he does heat up and hopefully just in time for the post season.

All shooters go through slumps....Austin just needs to keep firing and with some luck, he'll get hot again at just the right time.

He will regress (improve) to the mean, and there's no reason to not continue to shoot himself through it. You get into real trouble when you start overthinking open looks. If he's open, whether it be on broken plays or plays called for him, he should look for his shot just as he did earlier in the season.

Austin has the form of the aforementioned Williams and Coleman. I suggested spending half the time shooting at a rebounding rim ( slightly smaller ) it is amazing how big a regular rim is after firing 20-25 footers at a smaller rim.

Maybe Austin needs to get some 'Wild Thing' sports goggles.

Austin has fallen off the horse. So, he has to keep shooting to get back on the horse.

the most consistent 3-point shooters on the team this season are Dre, Mav, and Welch. Against a zone, 2 of these 3 guys should be on the floor at the same time, replacing either Williams or Coleman, who aren't elite passers, shooters, or ball handlers. What this would do is provide a 3-pronged outside attack in the two Hollins plus either Welch or Mav. This would open up the interior for Trevor and/or Williams/Coleman/EE and cutting guards. Also, EE has really shown prowess passing the ball, particularly from the FT area. As such, EE should act as a ball distributor in the middle.

Against man D, the team simply needs to do a better job of inside/outside passing, driving-and-dishing, and setting up multiple screens for their best shooters (Hollins, Mav, Welch, Hollins). EE, by the way, appears to me to be the team's best screen setter.

This is what I do on the Midway at the State Fair.

Exactly and the coaches agree.

and some other notes, per Amelia:

Julian Welch will probably be getting “more and more minutes” after the guard’s 10-point, 7-assist, 0-turnover performance on Saturday, Taylor said. The Gophers are trying to use Andre Hollins off the ball more and so will be relying more heavily on either Welch or Maverick Ahanmisi (or both). “Julian’s playing like he was playing last year and that’s the type of Julian we know he can be,” Taylor said.

Versus man to man we are not a very good screening team. Mbakwe and mabye ingram really get a body on people.

Austin went from our best 3 point threat to liquid nitrogen cold. 99% of those have been phenomenal looks also. He should use the old trick of stepping in a few feet and shooting jumpers each day then as soon as he starts sinking those, extend his range out a step until he eventually gets outside of the arc. I noticed Dakich said during the IU game that the ball was coming off his hand oddly. Maybe he should also just spin the ball off his hand up in the air, another old school trick to get back to basics for a bit before the tourney.

Well said sir. I agree.

We might want to try what every successful team does -- pass well to get shooters an open shot.

If you think Austin Hollins' 3 pt looks in recent games haven't been "open shots" you're watching the wrong channel
