First of all, this search has been an endless source of entertainment for me. Thank you all for contributing. The News on Shaka Smart thread was beyond epic.

1) Our new coach will have never been mentioned on this site, or in any social media format.

2) News of our hire will, for the most part be unheralded, mocked, and fuel a lot of anger amongst the fan base.

3) Over the next 2-4 years prediction 2 will yield to unrepentant joy.

Perhaps. I am not sure taking an assistant that no one has heard of into a big ten head coaching job will go well or finish well.

Ufdah I don't think I could take more going backwards. I hold out hope for something promising.

Yup, I see it now

(1) Teague and Ellis name themselves as our new co-head coaches. They won't require assistant coaches.
(2) I think that would be mildly stating the announcement
(3) I'm optimist but unrepentant joy might be over selling the results.

It could very well go wrong. I just don't get the importance of getting someone that "everyone has heard of". Every single coach in the country was attainable at some point. Every coach was an assistant that "nobody has heard of" at some point. How irate would the fan base have been if we hired Bill Self (nobody) instead of Monson? How about if we hired Buzz Williams (nobody) instead of Tubby?

The right guy is out there, the process of identifying him takes some time. It's not a game of Hungry Hippo.

There are probably 50 coaches, minimum, who could get us to a top-4 finish.

They're coaching at various levels.

It would be nice to find one.

Time for us to get lucky.

THIS. +1,000,000

I'd love to see Dane Fife as the new coach. Young, energetic, and an inside track to MSU hoops... plus, I bet he's helped Izzo in recruiting Tyus. Could that help?

I had not heard of Enfield or Marshall till the last 7 days. It's either Enfield this week or Marshall next week.

You and I are thinking alike. I figure we take the HC from Minot State. Assistants would be Jimmy Williams, Ellis, and Beth.

How upset would we have been if we'd hired Self instead of Monson? Really? Self had accomplished as much at Tulsa as Monson had, save a couple of tournament wins. How upset would we have been? Not at all. Terrible example. With the # of names that have been mentioned here, even assistants, if it's someone we've never heard of, that's a terrible sign.

Stop making sense. You are killing my Buzz...

Fife could be worth a shot, mainly because he's a regional guy. Don't know much about him.

How about Bryce Drew? He's got a little experience, coach's kid, point guard, another regional guy. I'm not sure if his style of play would play would work in the Big 10. That's where Fife has an advantage, but is he ready for this?

Fife gave up being a head coach to work as an assistant under Izzo, whom it is speculated he will eventually take over for. Works with the guards and has an inside track on recruiting Tyus, already, which is a plus. His career win-loss record, at 64-85, is not a plus. He'd be a risk, but if he worked out, he could be around for a long time.

I would be happy with Fife. Do we know that he has a relationship with Tyus? Has it been explicitly stated anywhere that he contacts him? Or is it Stephens/Izzo that handle his recruitment? I can't recall hearing/seeing anything explicit.

I don't have anything specific but i've visited links to Twitter commentary that shows Fife making remarks about recruiting and other people mentioning him travelling with Izzo in the process.

How about Michael White of LA Tech? Only 36, A Villa 7 guy, and won 25 games his second year at LA Tech.

Interesting candidate. I think Michael White has a bright coaching future. He also has indirect ties to Norwood Teague.

Michael White's father is currently the Duke athletic director. Previously Kevin White (Michael's dad) had been AD at Notre Dame, Arizona State, Tulane, and others. While at Arizona State, Kevin White hired a guy named Norwood Teague to be part of the ASU staff.

Realistic alternative ending number three:

BB Program reconstruction that ends up taking 5-8 years to turn around UNTIL we get the practice facility and recruiting improves. (Look what Nebraska did - it took investment in the facility to lure an up and coming coach to a non-basketball school). NT's first diamond in the rough hire is bridge hire, because we still have no practice facility, enthusiasm wanes, that leads to his second hire, when reconstruction really begins. I'm not predicting it, I'm not resigned, but I'm concerned.

Is it possible we are waiting on Wichita's Marshall?

Possible, but he has turned down big jobs in the past and I'm afraid we won't offer anything close to what he's looking for. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm still convinced flip will be hired. A lot of coaches in the metro still believe flip is the guy and since Teague and company have done such a tight lipped job on this search I don't know why some are so confident in flip at this point.

Stop being rationale. You'll give the board a bad name.;)

Yeah, that sounds like such a better alternative than backing down on some principle(not allowing supposed Nepotism) and just hiring Flip. Why would we hire Flip and POSSIBLY get all we want NOW, when we can hire some bridge hire and wait 5-8 years to get all we want?!

Thing is, by the time he's done playing, most of the good jobs are gone. If he's considering a move, the music's winding down and there's only a couple chairs left. Maybe one has Goldy's picture on it?

Anybody catch Gregg Marshall on Dan Patrick this morning? I can't see him going over too well with the "Minnesota Nice" crowd.
