It's a good thing...shooting evens out....we are playing crappy teams and winning with lousy three point shooting. Blistering three point shooting is the only way I can see us beating the better Big Ten teams. Despite the numbers to the contrary, I'd say it is our strength.

I have to respond to samloupete: Enough with the broken record about seeing more of Johnson. Our coach is very experienced at developing young players and getting them ready to play against the tough Big Ten competition.

Bottom Line: During meaningful minutes, coaches don't play players they do not trust to compete within the offense and defense the team is running. I have no inside info, but I have coached sports at the high school level. I have many examples of players who were very good at SOME aspects of the game.

But they could not be trusted: sometimes they didn't understand how hard they had to play ALL the time. Some players could not be trusted to execute. They either reacted too slowly or could not focus for the entire defensive possession. Or they bogged down the offense by not understanding the principles of the offense.

At any rate, I can only assume that despite Johnson's outstanding shooting ability, there are crucial aspects of team basketball the coach doesn't trust yet.

...which is not to say she won't pick them up as the season progresses.

Thanks to Longtime for speaking from coaching experience. Had more than one coach tell me, "Doesn't help if they score 15, but give up 16". Trust built up during practice and work-outs is truly a big deal for most coaches.
And Janel is right, players can and do improve. No guarantee, but if she's the player we think she is, Johnson is working hard to pick up concepts and learning how hard you have to play "All-The-Time" to cut it defensively at the college level. Some players pick it up more quickly and better than others.
I wouldn't be shocked, at this point of her career, to see her come into a game in situation where there's 3 seconds to play and the Gophers need their best 3 point shooters to try to win or tie a game.

The only thing that has me a little (and I mean a little) concerned is that she was with the team most of last year and was able to practice and learn the defense. Yes, it still takes time, but you would think she would have gained that trust by now. Anyway, Go Gophs! Excited for this team!

I've seen plenty of really good players take until into their junior year until the light completely came on. Not that they aren't trying or aren't bright enough. For some players, concepts and recognition skills take longer to become instinctive than for others. As for playing hard, that is also something that some players take longer to get themselves to the next gear consistently.

Good observation. A heartwarming example is Julia Hanson of the Gopher volleyball team who has gone from being a reserve last year to an almost super star this year. We can think of more examples. It is hard to explain how that happens and what clicks in. If we knew, we would all be world class coaches. From working with students for many years, I have seen that many students grow more in the summer after their freshman year than perhaps any other time. Also, some are late bloomers and it takes longer for things to click in--junior, senior, or beyond. There is a maturity factor and for some athletes it is a matter of growing into or developing their bodies.

The non-conference schedule is a joke so I can’t get too worked up if someone is struggling or two happy if someone is lighting it up… best stat for me so far is a team stat..

Turnovers are down! The Gophers would give the ball away plenty no matter the level of competition the last few years.. it was painful hopefully they can keep this up… more efficient on Offense and it helps on D buy not gifting other teams layups or extra possessions

They already know she is done for the year? Didn't the injury just happen? She seemed in really good spirits last night. Not saying its true but I will want to see it confirmed.

From the StarTribune:
She got hurt during morning shoot earlier Wednesday; Plitzuweit said she just stepped wrong. Tests were done Wednesday afternoon, and there will be more before the extent of the injury is known.

Yeah I read this as well and was surprised to hear the season. An Achilles would be the season, but she didn’t have crutches did she? Could he have meant the calendar year?

Well hopefully the broken bone heals properly this time if that is true. Sometimes recovery is faster than a sprain. At least this happened now while the schedule is lighter. I would think she would have time to return; but I'm not a doctor. Will wait to hear the announcement.
