25 year drought and counting for Big Ten… (and only 1 title since 1989)

Michigan State

Even after Izzo steps down I think they keep their identity of defense and rebounding which will get it done.

Big Ten has only 1 title since Glen Rice won it in 1989.

Go Gophers!!

Blame it on Wisconsin. They were awful until about 2000 (Dick Benedict). Since then no titles.

Michigan will break the streak. They currently have the best combination of money and coaching in the league.

The Big Ten performed well… About up to expectations. Michigan State lost to a one seed… Purdue got hose by the refs, and ultimately lost to a one seed. Maryland won games despite their coach being on the way out the door. To start the tournament 10-0 or whatever indicates that it was a good conference. SEC just has the couple of elite teams. I still don’t buy that the SEC should’ve gotten 16 teams in. I maintain that’s ridiculous.

Agreed...5-7 really strong teams but none at top of the college hoops food chain.

I still contend that Illinois had more pure talent than any other team in the league, even without Dainja, but they never reached their true potential. Maybe combes has some insight on what happened.

As crazy as the Big Ten streak is it has been even longer since a team from the Western portion of the United States has won the title (Arizona 1997). The East has dominated college basketball.

As for which Big Ten team ends the streak....feels like MSU is the team that keeps getting the closest but maybe someone like UCLA will break both streaks now that they are in the Big Ten.

If it weren't for Tyus Jones, Bucky would have the title a while back.

That would have been a massive puke.

Keep in mind the Big Ten has been in the title game eleven times in those thirty-five years. That's 31.4% of the time. It's not like they aren't getting there.
That is a good point....the Big Ten has done well just can't seem to win the title.

If you want the drought ended, they have to play better. The conference looked weak. I think I described them as soft about the end of February as a conference.

The New York Times did a full write-up on the Big Ten's drought, analyzing the results. Noted how in the national championship games the Big Ten has mostly been the underdogs.

Per the story, of the 8 Big Ten runners-up since 2000, they had 22 NBA Draft picks with 15 first-rounders. Their opponents had 37 NBA picks, with 24 first-rounders. Of the 8 winners, 7 had a higher KenPom Net Rating than the Big Ten runners-up

The NCAA Selection Committee didn't buy it either as only 14 of 16 SEC Conference Teams made the Field of 68.

Only LSU & South Carolina failed to get a bid.

The recent B1G is not a top basketball conference. It's obvious.
Been better than ACC for a while and right there with Big 12 this year but yeah SEC was really dominant. Just don’t have enough high end teams.

Damn that is a ridiculous statement.

They had 7 teams in the Sweet 16 and 4 teams in the Elite 8.

Sorry...don't think it's so ridiculous. B10 had 4 in the Sweet 16 and 1 in the Elite 8 (should've been 2). Clearly the top 2-3 teams in the SEC were great this year. My point was the fact they had 14 out of 16 teams in the tournament.
