With all the chatter and concern about the 2014 class what about 2013?? There is a very highly touted recruit out of Minnesota who plays a position of need... Kyle Washington... Do we have a shot at him???? Is this the first step in convincing the studs of 2014 it's ok to come to the U and become a local ledgend???

I coached against this kid while he was an 8th grader, physical specimen then, I'm sure just as gifted now...

Thoughts??

Good chance Minnesota lands him imo, he will be playing for howard pulley again this summer and Tubby seems to have a good relationship with that program with Coleman, White, Williams and Tyus. No others from Minnesota really have a chance at high D1 offers. Maybe Dearing but he would have to have a monster summer and Senior year.

Washington and Thomas are the two guys I'd love to see, not sure who else is on the radar.

We'd have to replace the scholarships of Rodney, Ingram, Welch, and possibly Trevor (dependant upon an NCAA waiver or not) so we've got some room to add people.

Right now I think Dearring has a better chance at playing at Winona St. than he does being a high major . I think the Manyang kid (from Duluth, or Rochester, or wherever he is right now) has a shot, but I'm guess the off the court stuff keeps him away. Otherwise, 2013 is not good in state for high major talent.

Last time I saw, a group of PF's several from Chicago. Tubby has always recruited well in the Fall. I know the NIT is not sexy enough for many on the board, but fortunately that's not the case with many recruits. A young team making a long run in the NIT says program on the rise. I'm not a star gazer, but I expect a very strong recruiting class fueled by our run.

I'd love to see Washington here. I think he looks like a great player. Thomas sounds like a shooter, which is what we need. I'd be happy landing those two and banking a schollie or two for the next year.

On ESPNU they were televising the National High School Invitational tourney and I caught the end of them talking about a player and they were naming schools of interest and they named Minnesota. Did anyone catch the players name? the game was between Ravenscroft (NC) and Montrose Christian (MD).

Platitude alert but needs to be stated: tourney championship game televised in prime time on ESPN is good for the recruiting of any D1 program.

In a perfect world I would love to get Matt Thomas, Kyle Washington, Akolda Manyang, and Juwan Parker. Would be very happy if we get any 2 of those. Wouldn't mind adding a JUCO point guard if there are any good options who don't have any red flags.

Great comment about Bucky! Love this kid already. Hope we get him.

Another name that's been brought up before: Nick Fuller. I think I remember reading he's a lot like Thomas. Fuller has offers from Marquette, Toledo, Creighton, and Butler. Toby Hegner has offers from Marquette, Iowa State, and Northwestern, so I'm surprised I haven't heard his name brought up yet. Wisconsin, the state not the school, has a pretty good class of 2013.

Yes nothing impresses recruits more than a NIT banner hanging from the rafters.

Fuller and Hegner do not have Marquette offers. I think I mentioned this a while back, but Buzz offered a number of in-state kids very early and I do not believe they would be accepted at this point.

Hegner is a very mobile big with some good perimeter skills, but he has a little ways to go with his body and consistent production. I would bet he ends up as a mid-major guy. Fuller is taller than Thomas, but not nearly as skilled. He is more of a SF, whereas Matt is more of a SG who could play a SF in a 3-guard lineup. Mark Miller reported recently that Fuller was getting increased interest from Iowa, Washington St. and Nebraska.

I still think UW has a reasonable shot at landing Thomas, but he was never a lock for UW due largely to how late they made a push for him. They have a lot of work to do this summer if they really want him, as Iowa St. and Virginia are both very realistic possibilties for Matt.

Appreciate all your knowledge and insight, UWOle. In regards to Fuller and Hegner, both DO have offers according to Rivals, not that Rivals is always accurate.

The banner won't impress them, but they may say, this team is close ... I could take them to the next level.

I think what he meant is they did technically get offers, so at one point that was accurate, but they have just essentially expired. It's not exactly a formal thing when offers expire, so Rivals probably isn't going to change it.

That's not exactly what I was saying, but close. I would be surprised if Buzz would have ever accepted commitments from those guys. It's moot at this point, as I am pretty sure Marquette is out of 2013 scholarships.

There was a Twitter message from Chicago that said PF Alex Foster is down to Minnesota, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Tennessee.

Ryan James tweet, update on one of our 2013 recruits.

Tweet from Marcus:

"Former Gophers 2012 target Phil Nolan, who is playing with Net Gain, is going to prep school and now in 2013 class. Still on Tubby's radar."

Go Gophers!!
