2010 recruiting

How many scholarships do we have available for next year's class.

3 to give..........

if everyone stays. D. Johnson, Westbrook and Bostick will be he seniors.

We had a really nice 09 class, does the 2010 class look to have the same potential?

Anyone heard recent recruiting news about Cory Joseph??? I havent been keeping track of him too much

if we could somehow get Harrison Barnes...havent heard much about the gophers going after the Iowa native however...

What are our 2010 needs? I'm assuming a big man for continuity, a PG, and then best athlete available? If we pull in three does that seem right?

Here's what I see for the three scholarships:

#1 Cory Joseph- with Jacob Thomas as the back-up if we can't land him
#2 Elliason, Calcaterra, Kelm- I see a post project type
#3 Best player we can sign a 4 Star guy at any position-Harrison Barnes would be the huge.

what is ecruiting? is that some new iphone application that helps track high school basketball players?

I think Harrison Barnes is a Duke or UNC commit waiting to happen. But, according to this article, Tubby attended one his high school games about three weeks ago, so you never know.

I don't think so. Look at the wing/forward recruiting classes of Duke and UNC for 2009 and verbals for 2010. Both are already loaded with 4 and 5 star recruits at his position.

In the end, I think the real competition will be with Kansas, Florida, and Iowa State,

Huh? Neither Duke or North Carolina have a single small forward in either of their 2009 or 2010 class. Barnes is the No. 1 ranked Small Forward in the nation. It is generally thought that Small Forward is the last remaining need for both UNC and Duke, which is why they are each falling all over themselves to get him. Barnes is Coach K's top remaining priority for 2010, according to a recent update on Rivals or Scout (I can't remember which).

UNC and Duke have a lot of PF and SG committed, but no SF committed, which is why both want Barnes.

i really dont seem him going all the way to carolina...not that i know this or anything but it seems like he is the type of kid who is going to stay closer to home...seems like kansas would be likely

I hate to say this, but I think we're a few years away from being able to legitimately compete with UNC and Duke for a non-local kid (I would not consider Barnes local). Unless the recruit has a desire to be "the guy", I would imagine most are going to go for the tradition and prestige of the power programs (UNC, Duke, etc.) rather than an up and coming type like the U. I don't think anyone doubts Tubby's coaching, but at the same time, we have yet to prove here that we will win consistently and on the scale and stage that those teams have.

In a few years, maybe. But for now, I would guess no on players like Barnes. But, thankfully, I am far from an expert, and I hope to be wrong.

Excellent point, actually. Tubby signed good (but local) players at Tulsa, or "projects" from other states. Ditto at Georgia, his best recruits were local players. Only at Kentucky after 1998 NC did he signed BOTB (Bogans, Stone) nationally. And then again after #1 (AP poll and NCAA overall seeded) team in 2003 - he signed the #1 class the following year (2004 class).

You might be right for the 5-star types, but I seem to remember Kentucky making a push to land Sampson, and Kansas trying to get Joseph.

UK had Sampson visit at Midnight Madness. Florida offered Colton Iverson. Both Kansas and Texas wanted Devoe Joseph.

UNC 2010 Verbal 6'5 Wing Reggie Bullock 5 Stars
UNC 2009 Class 6'4 Wing Leslie McDonald 4 Stars; 6'10 Forward John Henson 5 Stars; 6'9 Forwards John and Travis Wear 4 Stars

Duke 2010 Verbal 6'4 Wing Andre Dawkins 4 Stars; 6'8 Forward Josh Hairston 5 Stars
Duke 2009 Class 6'9 Forward Ryan Kelly 5 Stars; 6'10 Forward Mason Plumlee 4 Stars

UNC has (1) 5 star and (1) 4 star wings along with (1) 5 star and (3) 4 star forwards in the two upcoming classes. Duke has (1) 4 star wing and (1) 4 star and (2) 5 star forwards coming in the next two classes. That's not loaded at the wing/forward?

Both Duke and UNC have a roster full of 4 Star and 5 Star recruits.

Despite having those commitments, both want Barnes, too.

Duke and UNC can want to add him to their collection, but my point was that he'll likely consider that scenario when seeing that Kansas/Florida/Minnesota aren't loaded up at his position. Is Barnes a one and done? If he's looking at a short stay, I see that helping our cause.

Recruiting Never Stops

(Gene Keady saying) Recruiting is like shaving. If you don't do it for a few days, you look like a bum.

UNC 2010 Verbal 6'5 Wing Reggie Bullock 5 Stars
UNC 2009 Class 6'4 Wing Leslie McDonald 4 Stars; 6'10 Forward John Henson 5 Stars; 6'9 Forwards John and Travis Wear 4 Stars

NONE of those are small forwards. Just because you are listed at a forward doesn't mean you're a wing. Here's the breakdown.

For Duke:

Dawkins plays the TWO.
Hairston and Kelly play the FOUR (they are NOT wings).
Plumlee plays the FOUR or FIVE (he is NOT a wing).
Thornton plays the ONE.

For UNC:

Bullock and McDonald play the TWO.
Marshall and Strickland play the ONE.
Henson and the Wear brothers all play the FOUR.

Barnes plays the THREE! You see, neither Duke or UNC has a Small Forward in either of their 2009 or 2010 classes. UNC's ONLY need is the small forward. Duke's ONLY need is the small forward. Barnes is the No. 1 small forward in the country. They are in hot pursuit not to "add to their collection" but because they have a legitimate NEED at small forward.

He's visited Duke twice already and in one of the visits he was at a game wearing a Duke t-shirt. He openly talked last week about his like of UNC, predicting they will win the National Title and that he'd like to see that. My prediction is that he'll attend school on Tobacco Road.
