19 Teams Have A Shot at Earning At-Large Bid to College Football Playoff

Absent earning an automatic bid, there are 19 teams in the hunt for an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff. I can't see anyone else cracking into this group, though I gave brief (very brief) consideration to Boise State, Colorado, and Washington State.

ACC (4): Clemson, Miami, Pitt, SMU

Big Ten (4): Indiana, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State

Big XII (3): BYU, Iowa State, Kansas State

SEC (7): Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M

Independent (1): Notre Dame

Will be interesting to see how much this list shrinks in the next 6 weeks.

I would also consider Army for an at large bid. They could go undefeated, finish as the 6th highest ranked conference champion, and would need (and likely get) an at-large bid since they missed the auto-bid cut.

I just can't see anyone from outside the ACC/Big Ten/Big XII/SEC other than Notre Dame getting an at-large. Would love to see Army do that, though, as it would put the committee in a really tough spot.
 

Missouri could run the table and be 6-2 and 10-2. They have Oklahoma, South Carolina, Mississippi State and Arkansas.

Illinois could run the table and be 7-2 and 10-2. Minnesota, MSU, Rutgers, Northwestern.

Other teams that technically could get to 2 losses in conference and overall are Syracuse, Duke, and Arizona State.

Colorado could go 8-1 in conference and 10-2 overall.

Man did Missouri get a favorable schedule. The SEC has 7 teams besides Missouri that are currently ranked. Missouri plays just two of them. They could go 6-2 in the conference without beating a team that ends the season ranked. Just about any other 2 loss P4 team should get in ahead of them if this happens. It's actually crazy they're still ranked. But it's the SEC so...

This is why I was a big fan of growing the playoff field. It is the first weekend of November and close to 20 teams still have a shot to make it to the dance. There is a lot of season left, but historically an early season loss could put you in the back seat. Now, if you keep stacking wins who knows how things will play out. If the Gophers beat NC they would be one of those fringe teams scratching to get in.
