1500: Wolves newcomer Gorgui Dieng is a big fan of 'U' coach Richard Pitino

"Richard is just like a brother to me," Dieng said Wednesday, talking after the first day of the Wolves' Summer League practices. "He will always be there anytime I need him. I'm sure I'm going to get to see him plenty of the time while I'm here."

Dieng, who expects to stop by a Gophers practice once Summer League wraps up, laughed when he said that Pitino was asking him to come work out at Williams Arena during the lead-up to the draft, but his agent told him no.

"But he was always the one behind the scenes who would calm a player down, trying to make them understand what his dad wanted. He controlled the team. He was the one who ran the offensive plays -- and he drew up every play. He's a very smart coach."

"He gave me a lot of instruction," Dieng said. "I'm not saying anything bad about (Duke center) Mason Plumlee because he's a good player, but (Pitino) was the one who said that he couldn't move as fast as me. So he wanted me to come off the screens fast, so (Plumlee) would be late. Coach Richard told his dad about that."
