"It's definitely up-tempo. It's just fast-paced," Hollins said with a slight grin, while wiping the sweat from his face with his already soaked jersey. "We're definitely going to be in shape ... Everyone is starting to get the hang of it."

Pitino has had to pick his spots in terms of installing specific plays and schemes with the start of fall practices still more than three months away.

"I've tried to take it somewhat easy on them, but also kind of instill the culture," Pitino said. "Just because we're only allowed two hours and when the season starts, we're going to practice much, much more than that."

Tuesday marked the first time this summer the Gophers held a full-fledged scrimmage, where the coaching staff sat back and let the players work through it. As Pitino quipped before practice, "I'm sure it will be a disaster but that's the way it is."

STrib: Pitino, players both adusting in early practices

“I think we’ve handled it well,” rising junior Andre Hollins said. “Like I said before, it was just weird, a little bit, in the beginning. But it’s a new start, it’s a fresh start, we’re starting over and we’re all excited, excited to see what the new players can do and for all of us to contribute. It’s going to be fun.”

FSN: New Minnesota coach Richard Pitino pushing players hard

"I know I'm going to be in the best shape of my life," point guard Andre Hollins said after Tuesday's practice. "I'm like 194, 195 (pounds) now. Normally in the summertime, I get up to like 200 from a lot of weight lifting. But we've been doing a lot of running and conditioning lately, so I'm in really good shape this summer."

"You've got to be careful to really try to predict too much too soon," he said. "I've gotten a little better feel, but adversity hasn't really hit these guys yet. They're not going to class for a full day, then coming to us, lifting. They're not really dealing with a whole lot of adversity. Summertime's a lot different than the regular season. They're great kids. They're going to get better, but it's still really early to tell."

PiPress: Gophers basketball: Mo Walker hears coach's ultimatum, loses 45 pounds

"It was more of a wake-up call to me," Walker said after Tuesday's practice. "I knew I was overweight and stuff. But I kind of just lived with it and played with it comfortably. But ever since I've been training my body, it's been a big benefit to me."

Pitino's up-tempo style demanded Walker change his body, but he said it's been "fun."

"I'm fine with it," Walker said. "(There are) a lot more touches, a lot more shots going up, a lot more opportunities to rebound and do what I'm good at."

The good news is the start of fall practice is actually just over 2 months away... ~70 ish days.

Seriously? When/Where did you hear this?

It just is what it is. I'm assuming the Gophers first game will be Friday, November 8.. which will put their first practice date at Friday, September 27.

It would have been October 18 had it not been for a rule change effective this year. That may explain why the ESPN 1500 author made an inaccurate statement.

The rule change effectively doubles the amount of preseason practice that most teams would have had if it weren't for the rule change this year.

As for when the team will hold a "madness" type event - don't know. I'd probably hold off for a week or two, but I think we'll see a wide range of plans when comparing program to program.

Will Pitino's style work in the Big Ten and if so could it change the style of play in the Big Ten? Except for Wisconsin of course.

I want to preface this by saying that I am 100% on board with Pitino, but I had a thought while reading Amelia's recap of the scrimmage. One of the main problems with last year's team was the inability to take care of the basketball. Could Pitino's frenetic style of play exacerbate that problem? Obviously, it's not the exact same team but I think it could be a concern.

That's a fair concern, though I think the "frantic style" is more associated with pressure D and lots of trapping. With more possessions there is a higher probability of more turnovers overall, but there will likely be fewer actual passes compared to a slowed down, prodding half court style that we had with Tubby.

Well Coleman is gone so...

I'll go back to what I said during the season. We made Wisconsin uncomfortable and forced them into turnovers by throwing full-court and half-court-trap defenses at them. Then Tubby inexplicably went back to half-court, and the Badgers were back in their comfort zone. We might not be able to make the Wisconsin game an up and down affair, but we absolutely have to get them out of their comfort zone.
