Offensive coordinator and O-line coach Matt Limegrover is staying optimistic about Bobek being available this season, but he is preparing his line as if it will be without the 6-foot-2, 282-pound junior.

"I wish I had an answer to it. I'm proceeding as though he won't, but I would like to be pleasantly surprised," said Limegrover, who spoke with Bobek about the situation last weekend.

"Epping is a better guard than he is a center, so he needs to stay at guard as much as he can," Limegrover said. "I'm not saying he won't end up at center, but right now to give us the best chance to win one of those guys, whether it's Jon, Tommy, Ernie or whoever, needs to be our center and (Epping) needs to stay at guard."

Go Gophers!!

What's the deal with all these O-linemen? How many injuries do we have that are carrying over?

I obviously feel horrible Zach, but that was pretty well known. I think the more important part of the article is Bobek. There was a lot of conjecture about his ailment during the spring, and honestly I thought it was mono. Apparently it is far more serious than that...hopefully he can play. As it is, Christiansen is a solid center, but we better hope he doesn't get hurt.

Bobek is quickly becoming the new Brandon Beal. Does anyone know what the scoop on Beal BTW?

Beal is done. Hard for me to equate Bobek's illness to Beal's known history of knee injuries.

From what I read in layman's terms, they probably felt he had viral myocarditis. Even if there were evidence of full recovery, I'd be a little nervous given the demand these big guys' hearts are under. He could be at risk of arrhythmia. Coach Randy Walker died of sudden cardiac death a couple years after an episode of myocarditis, I think.

This is why coaches talk about depth being so important. Players get hurt, they get sick, and good teams have the depth to replace them with (relatively) little drop-off in performance.

Last year, we saw what happened when injuries hit the O-line. That's why (IMHO) Kill & Co. have made O-Line a recruiting priority.

My question - what ever happened to the McAvoy brothers? I remember when they committed that people were high on their potential - but it doesn't seem like they have even sniffed the 2-deeps. (But, that's another reason for depth being important - because some recruits just don't pan out like you thought they would.......)

In their defense, they were just RS freshman last year, so it's not that abnormal that they didn't play as offensive lineman.

I've heard a few people ask about the McAvoy's. This is where you can see the depth that Kill is building. As prof pointed out, they were only RS freshmen last year. If we want a solid OL, you want to be playing upperclassmen, not RS freshman and sophomores (Campion being a great exception because he's like 35 years old!). I wouldn't say that the McAvoy's haven't panned out, but our OL is being built correctly.

Can someone who watches and knows offensive line play more than I do explain what happened to Tommy Olson? Just not as good as we all thought/hoped?

Honestly? Yes. That said, as I understand it the excitement on Tommy was more potential than what he did in high school (could be wrong, don't watch MN HS football).

I usually watch the offensive lineman and I find both of the Olson brothers frustratingly inconsistent in terms of motor and footwork. Sometimes Tommy can be great, but I don't think he's as reliable right now as Caleb Bak is. Epping is certainly the best in this regard. His motor is fantastic.

I agree with the Olson brothers statement! Frustratingly inconsistent is a great way to put it!!

+1 Offensive linemen take time to develop and at the top schools they are often not expected to play until they are upper classmen. For what it is worth, Kyle McAvoy was the more highly recruited of the two brothers. They wanted to play together so Brewster recruited them by offering them both scholarships.

I just hope we can get stronger and healthy this year.
It has been said many times before. As our o-line goes, so will our team. They can help improve our passing...
The o-line, in my opinion, was too young to be seeing the field in the past two years.
Kill has to play with who he has and before they got a chance to grow up a little and get stronger they were riddled with injuries. I think the Olson brothers had injuries throughout last season. So, one could add that to some inconsistency.
Losing Zach and now possibly Brian B won’t help either. What happened to Foster Bush? I realize he is also young, but wasn’t Kill sort of high on him at one time?
