“The Paul Bunyan Axe is an awesome trophy. We get to look at it every single day."
per the State Journal:
University of Wisconsin safety Leo Musso chose a one-word answer when asked if it was hard to believe the Badgers have held on to Paul Bunyan’s Axe for 12 straight years.
“No,” he said.
UW’s current roster doesn’t know anything different than beating Minnesota. Even for a fifth-year senior from Wisconsin like Musso, this group of Badgers weren’t more than 10 years old the last time the Golden Gophers beat UW back in 2003.
The Axe has rested in the Badgers’ locker room since, but its presence still isn’t something UW takes for granted heading into the 126th meeting between the teams Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.
"Every year’s a different year, and I’ve learned that through playing in college football for four and a half years,” UW outside linebacker Vince Biegel said. "Just because you beat them the year before doesn’t mean anything.
“The Paul Bunyan Axe is an awesome trophy. We get to look at it every single day in our locker room. And as a senior going out, I’m going to do everything in my power to keep that Axe down in our locker room so that our freshmen can continue to look at that trophy every single day."
