Glen Mason still vividly remembers the conversation he had with his kicker 15 years ago.

It was November of 2003, and Mason at the time was the head coach of the Minnesota Golden Gopher football team. Mason’s Gophers were tied 34-34 with the rival Wisconsin Badgers. Just one second remained on the clock when kicker Rhys Lloyd was about to attempt a 35-yard field goal.

One of the teams called a timeout — Mason can’t recall that detail this many years later, maybe because both teams actually called one in those frantic final seconds — but he still can recite what he told Lloyd just before the kick.

The line Mason delivered to Lloyd has since been quoted endlessly and is forever etched into Gopher lore. Before he trotted out to line up for the kick, Lloyd heard his coach remind him: “Don’t forget the Axe.”
