***OFFICIAL FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I wonder how people would view Asuma if he wasn't "one of us" because his metrics are garbage. And although Patterson is technically "one of us", he still is viewed as more of an import. He's the third most productive player behind Garcia and Mitchell. His main problem is that he's a terrible...

Shooter: And word in coaching circles is that Tom Crean would love to have the Minnesota job.

Ask yourself which program Minnesota has more in common with, Marquette, Indiana, or Georgia.

Al Nolen's comments on the FDU broadcast

I want to hear the tape or at least read a transcript before passing judgment. I have no reason to doubt the OP, but it is a secondhand account. It’s tempting to say it’s a free country and so what. But I assume the radio announcers are at least indirectly viewed as representatives of the...

Shooter: And word in coaching circles is that Tom Crean would love to have the Minnesota job.

Crean has been able to attract top end talent. However, there's a reason no one else has taken a chance on him - he can't actually coach. He had Anthony Edwards and went 5-13 in the SEC. His last year at Georgia he was 1-17. I'm sure the casual fan will see a name they recognize and get all...

***OFFICIAL FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Torvik had this game predicted as 77-61, so that was pretty damn near the final score. My post about a 80-point game was an optimistic prediction, given how bad FDU's defense is - not what the analytics said. I'll admit it looked like it was WILDLY optimistic after a 20-point first half, though.

FDU is the 351st ranked defense. Should score at least 80 today. Think that’s bad? Morgan St. is the 360th ranked defense.

A qualifying list of potential replacements

This is kinda my point. They have a foundation/identity/brand now that MN lacks.

A qualifying list of potential replacements

Opinions can differ. I think that’s wishful thinking. I’m thinking “what is the program right now?”, meaning if the coach left, how attractive would the job be? Nebraska hasn’t really been that good even during Hoiberg’s tenure, but they’ve had a lot more energy than MN. The arena is a palace...

A qualifying list of potential replacements

I think you're optimistic on some of these - for instance, in the B10, I don't think Neb or Rut are worse jobs than MN. We can disagree, but both of them have assets that MN does not, IMO. And Northwestern has found their level - if Collins left, they'd likely be more attractive than MN, too.

A qualifying list of potential replacements

This is interesting - which of the P5 jobs ARE worse than MN? It's not that many. But it can change quickly - certainly you'd think DePaul is a worse job than MN, but they hired Holtmann, and now they're respectable again. Same town - Northwestern - the right guy can make it work reasonably well.

A qualifying list of potential replacements

It's also true that the talent pipeline in MN has been but a trickle during his tenure, at least compared to the Pitino era. Even if NIL weren't the dominant factor, the pickings within MN are too slim anyway. My #1 criteria for a new coach is demonstrated competence without superior talent. I...

Those aren't adjusted for tempo, but when you do that, those same schools show up: Seton Hall (314) BC (196) WF (194) UVa (180) VaTech (170) MN (168) Top 5 are Auburn, Alabama, Kentucky, Baylor, and Florida.

We basically agree. Besides the FTs, he’s very limited range-wise. As long as you’ve got other players that can make you pay for clogging the paint defensively, he can be an important asset. Without that, he is less effective - he needs good teammates.

Disagree on multiple counts. Payne had a good game yesterday, but he's not close to their best player. He's being used for a specific, complementary role that he is suited for. He would only get in the way on a CBJ team that has no idea how to use him optimally.

A qualifying list of potential replacements

He grew up in Iowa City. Therefore, dot, dot, dot I think people are right in thinking it's too early for him to move up. He's winning with a roster largely made up of his D2 players that transferred with him. That's impressive, but want to see him do it with new players before backing up the...

Shama: If there is a change in Golden Gophers basketball head coaches after this season, St. Thomas’ John Tauer should be a level one candidate.

Actually, that kind of thing does happen relatively frequently. The Horizon League has seen a few. But it happens for guys who were assistants at big programs, then took a head coach at a small, then got the big job. Tauer doesn’t have that first part.

I disagree. When you’re never going to have superior talent to the competition, coaching is the only hope.
