He Head coach is a position. Every team has one. They have a set of responsibilities, including recruiting and portal acquisition. Great coach is a description that means little once teams are assembled.

They are not getting a piece of the pie. The pie is the TV contract leagues sign and distribute to their member teams. These payments are coming from outside the pie.

Where did you get the idea Payne's replacement has to be better? That is not necessary for team success. If Mitchell is at least a better rebounder who takes away second and third shots from the other team, he's good enough and what we need.

Pharrel Payne visiting Indiana this week.

Maybe you're right. I have no idea how much money NBA teams are spending to run their minor league. Got nothing against it or for it.

College Basketball Transfer Portal Thread - 2024

It's the head coach who attracts players to the program, with or without the amount of payroll other teams have. So far he has attracted Battle, Garcia, Christie, Fox, Hawkins, Mitchell and Michell, plus some decent small school guys the first year. The AD will judge him based on record within...

I do understand what you are saying and don't entirely disagree. But I don't think it is an observable difference to college fans if some of the best players are not on the court or field and are replaced by guys only marginally less talented. If a competitive basketball game is won on a...

Getting good players is the measurement of a coach. He is good or bad depending on the talent. Johnson's tenure at Minnesota depends solely on portal acquisition right now.

Here's the pitch: Gophers won two Big Ten games in 2022-23 and nine Big Ten games last year. That was the biggest jump in wins of any team in the conference. They were competitive in most games. They have some solid Big Ten talent returning. That's a huge improvement and a sign the team is...

Ranking Big Ten men’s basketball coaches (#18. Ben Johnson, Minnesota)

Only here would overcoming a 20-point deficit to win a game be considered a negative.

I don't think Iowa womens basketball or LIV golf are good examples. Caitlin got (deservedly) more media attention than any female athlete in history. Iowa and the womens' game benefited from that but it is a kind of one off at the moment. Pro golfers are their own franchise. They are not...

The easy answer is, would PJ Fleck allow a guy to enter the portal, test the waters, and then come back?

I just have the feeling Payne was not a leader in any clubhouse dissention but perhaps more in sympathy with his two fellow sophomore class friends. Payne's decision seems much more likely to be simply based on money and perceived market value. He got as much playing time as his ailing back...

    Any chance of a return?

Not so hard if three bigs on the other team have all fouled out with ten minutes to play.

    Any chance of a return?

Well stated. Fox is the best barometer of team chemistry. He's all in and that, to me, can be read as a clear sign the majority of the team stayed together all season.

Do you know for sure the mental health break was non-related to basketball and playing time?

Might depend on if he's a year older and who he was behind at LSU. Don't take Georgia as literal. Means blue blood programs. He knows he can come to Minnesota tomorrow or next week. No rush.

Take the rebounding all day. We were not a good rebounding team last year and it hurt most in giving the other team offensive boards and second and third chances to score.

Your memory is OK. But some of those "catchable" passes were bounce passes through a forest of arms and legs in the lane that would tax the reflexes of a good third baseman. Hawkins has some learning to do regarding who his passes are intended for and weighing the risk/reward based on that...
