2023-2024 College Basketball Coaches Hired/Fired Thread

I really think the extra covid year plus all these other redshirts/waivers/extra year for whatever has caused somewhat of a domino effect on the one and done schools. Talent matters a lot, but it’s not as big of a factor when you put a team of 18-20 year olds (many a year removed from HS)...

Payne in portal (UPDATED: Payne commits to Texas A&M)

Where did you see his salary at $3M? It’s $1.95M which is lowest in the B1G https://www.twincities.com/2022/06/03/gophers-mens-basketball-coach-ben-johnson-to-receive-one-year-contract-extension/amp/

If Fleck leaves, who should realistically be on Coyle’s immediate call list?

I don’t think PJ is going anywhere so this is all moot to me, but the conversation can be fun so will add my 2 cents. If I’m Coyle my first call is Jimbo Fisher. Some probably already know this, but he has a connection to the U as his son regularly came to MN for treatment for a rare disease...

Oregon, Washington ‘Vetted and Cleared’ to Join Big Ten: Brett McMurphy

They aren’t going to consider travel at all. These student-athletes are not flying on commercial flights. Any PAC12 school (with the exception of the wild card Stanford) would sprint to the B1G if offered the chance. I think the PAC12 stays together, but regardless of the $$ there any of them...

Oregon, Washington ‘Vetted and Cleared’ to Join Big Ten: Brett McMurphy

IMO North Carolina, Virginia and GA Tech (2 of the 3) would be preferred to Wash/Oregon. Stanford not to be dismissed either. Will be interesting how it all plays out. Obviously the ACC grant of rights needs to be figured out, but no chance it lasts to 2036 and I think the first three would...

Oregon, Washington ‘Vetted and Cleared’ to Join Big Ten: Brett McMurphy

A few things… 1) Lots of this will depend on Notre Dame. Target #1 for the B1G as well as other conferences. 2) The ACC is a big factor as well. If push came to shove I think the B1G would take North Carolina and Virginia over Washington and Oregon. That ACC grant of rights agreement seems...

Who should be our next Coach?

Dutcher would be the obvious easy choice. He’s not going to be here 20 years, but he could play the Tubby Smith role of bringing the program back to respectability. I think he could do a little better than Tubby, but that’s just my opinion. Muss ain’t happening. I would love it, but that ship...

Forde: If everything is negotiable and every agreement is breakable is the Big Ten really committed to keeping Purdue and Minnesota for the long term?

The research part is what is most important, and being large public and/or a land grant university is often a precursor to having the resources necessary to do that research. But USC has an endowment of over $8B, good for third in the B1G, so resources are not an issue for them. I don’t think...

USC and UCLA Planning to join BIG TEN.

People always bring up Kansas, and I kind of get why but the reality is they don’t bring much to the table. Kansas needs the B1G a lot more than the B1G needs Kansas. They don’t grow the pie enough to justify getting a seat at the table. The B1G would be better off staying at 16 than adding...

Forde: If everything is negotiable and every agreement is breakable is the Big Ten really committed to keeping Purdue and Minnesota for the long term?

What do you mean by “doesn’t fit the mold”? Outside of being a private institution it has a lot in common with other B1G schools.

Forde: If everything is negotiable and every agreement is breakable is the Big Ten really committed to keeping Purdue and Minnesota for the long term?

There are 2 reasons this won’t happen. 1. The real $$ in the Big Ten is in the research partnerships that are worth billions. This is a major difference between the Big Ten and other conferences. There is a reason these decisions are up to university presidents and not athletic directors. It’s...

Former Rosemount HS standout and Gophers WR Jonathan Mann has entered his name into the transfer portal.

Great kid! Not sure what all of his options will be, but I know Liberty is in the mix

    Jay Wright retires

I get the speculation that the changing landscape has some to do with this, but I still think the main factor is that he is about at normal retirement age and likely has a net worth in the range of $30M-$50M. Coaching college basketball is a grind. When someone hits 60 and is financially set for...

Final Field of 68 Projection: Notre Dame, Rutgers, SMU, Wyoming & Xavier Among Toughest Calls

I'm a little late to the party, but we differ on 2. None have been called yet though. I have SMU and Oklahoma in. (my last 2 teams in) I have Xavier and Indiana out.

Final Field of 68 Snapshot: Max of 4 At-Large Bids Still Available As Bid-Stealers Still Lurk

Still need to update my projections, but I think a lot of the difference is in high end wins. here are blind resumes of the best wins (using NET rankings) for each team: Team A has wins over #13, #14, #24, #26, #36, and #38. Team B has wins over #13, #15, #26, and #34. Team C has wins over...

SMU and Memphis are in a close one in the last AAC semi. Might be a win-and-in or lose-and-NIT situation for the Mustangs.

    College Basketball 2021-2022 Thread

They’ve been hit pretty hard in NET and KenPom for playing so many close games. At the start of the day they were 26 in NET and 35 in KenPom. That’s worse than one would expect for a 25-4 team with 14 Q1/Q2 wins (good for 6th most in the country at the beginning of the day.)

Indiana up 1 on Illinois with 6 to go. This one might decide their NCAA fate one way or the other
