Gophers likely to climb in SP+ after loss to Michigan

SP+ considers Michigan to be the #5 defense in the country and believes that an average offense will score ~13.1 points against the Michigan defense. Minnesota out-gained Michigan 296-241 and gained 20 first downs to Michigan's 15. As odd as this is, Vegas is going to come away from this game...

    Best offensive play-calling we've seen since 2019

Adjusting for competition, the Gophers just called the two best drives we've seen since the Auburn bowl game. Very excited about this.

    NBC pregame show

Huge shout-out to NBC for actually previewing the Gopher / Iowa game instead of showing a bunch of unrelated highlights and then cutting to the game as the teams are kicking off.

Would Minnesota’s offense get shut out by Minnesota’s defense?

Minnesota simultaneously has one of the best defenses and worst offenses in the country. If they were to play each other, would the offense score?

Y'all are blaming the wrong thing for that loss...

Minnesota rushing: Marcus: 20 for 73 (3.7 avg) Christian: 1 for 5 Daniel: 1 for 5 Jordan: 2 for 3 The run game was bad. The run scheme was bad. UNC was blanketing receivers because Minnesota couldn't move the ball on the ground. Harbaugh should not be calling plays. It's not as bad as Sanford...

    Happy new year!

Saw Lou Holtz was on Cameo so asked him to make a quick video for Gopherhole! https://www.cameo.com/recipient/66bd84370fff78cdaa8f9ba8?from_share_sheet=1&utm_campaign=video_share_to_copy

    SP+ Implied Lines - 2024 Minnesota

Went through and looked at some of the SP+ numbers for 2024. Pretty surprised to see that Minnesota would be tentative dogs to Rutgers (SP+ really likes their defense). Also surprised to see touchdown favorites against UNC. I would guess that a lot of that stems from losing Drake Maye. Also...

ESPN program description for this afternoon’s game…

The ESPN program description gave me a good chuckle: “The Golden Gophers and their good grades face a test in the Quick Lane Bowl against the Falcons. Minnesota was the only five-win program needed to complete the 82-team bowl line”

Athan splits against top ten defenses versus all other defenses

The Gophers played against 5 of the Top 10 defenses in the country this year (per SP+) (WIS, OSU, IOWA, MICH, NEB). Against Top Ten defenses: CMP: 50% YPA: 4.8 TD: 3 INT: 5 Against all other defenses: CMP: 55% YPA: 7.4 TD: 11 INT: 4 ^ When playing against 'average' competition, he looked...

Athan finishes season ranked 14th in passer rating in B1G

Illinois, Indiana, and Northwestern each have two QBs that played a meaningful number of snaps this year with better passer ratings than Athan https://www.espn.com/college-football/stats/player/_/group/5/table/passing/sort/QBRating/dir/desc/

Daniel Jackson is the first receiver to reach 100-yards against Iowa this year

Kinda hard to tell but he just quietly put together a very impressive performance.

PJ is injuring his running backs and it has to stop

PJ asked Mo to run 30 times against OSU in the first game of a season and it led to a snapped Achilles. The very next year he asked that same running back to run 39 (!) times against Iowa _in a losing effort_. This year he has asked a true freshman to run 33, 22, and 31 times in successive...

Mack Brown considering playing ineligible receiver Tez Walker

Title is purposely inflammatory. I wouldn't be upset if they did this because he should have been ruled eligible, but it was interesting to hear a coach considering it.

Athan's 44 pass attempts most since Mitch threw 44 times against OSU in 2015

I was curious so I looked it up. The last time the Gophers threw that many times in a game was in 2015. Mitch completed 27 passes for 2 TDs and an INT on the way to a 28-14 Gopher loss to #3 tOSU led by Ezekiel Elliot.
