Playing not to lose can be a few things I think. (Both still mean you are trying to win =-) 1 - A conservative offense. 2 - A gameplan to keep a game close vs a team that has clearly better athletes.

Many people wouldn't find a change of nickname to be insulting. Unless the nickname is d##khead, but even then it could be a term of endearment. People are weird.
