Gophers football and men’s basketball among programs shining academically in latest APR report

Credit to Ben Johnson & staff and student-athletes for the basketball APR score.

Which Gophers did you miss on badly - you thought XYZ Gopher would be much better or much worse?

Rautins had an incredible first half at MSU against their Magic/Kelser eventual NCAA championship team. We led something like 42-29 at half time and the announcers were raving about him. That was his 15 (20) minutes of fame for Minnesota.

Which Gophers did you miss on badly - you thought XYZ Gopher would be much better or much worse?

Aaron Robinson—he looked like the longest of longest long shots to play the point in the Big Ten. Dan Monson & staff’s hard work with him and his determination made him a solid player. Same thing to a lesser extent for Townsend Orr—he was bigger and initially more talented.

    Hudson Dunn commits to Gophers!

My aspirational motto with apologies to Notre Dame: “Play for a champion!

    2024-25 Wild Season

It’s a fascinating if frustrating series. It’s the hockey version of a contrast in football teams: Vegas is ball control and the Wolves are quick strike. It’s also a reprise of Wolves-Lakers: The Wild rides Kaprisov & Boldy while the Knights have the deeper team.

Gophers land a big man....... 6' 10" Nehemiah Turner

Looking at the lineup at this point no one stands out as the center of gravity on offense. It’s always a delicate balance: generally offensive efficiency requires a serious scorer leading the way without the ball and ball movement dying in his hands.

Who would like the Gophers to have an intense rivalry with Notre Dame?

My grandfather loved to travel with his brothers-in-law by train to away Gopher football games in the 1930s and 1940s. The last time Minnesota played at Notre Dame they took one of the game-special trips which stopped in Chicago for a couple hours to give passengers time for a restaurant meal...

    All Things Gopher Baseball

Great steak which makes tomorrow’s game huge to strengthen our hand as much as possible for a pivotal home series with USC. As of today, it’s a 71 vs 47 RPI matchup. Sweeping Rutgers tomorrow with the headline of ten game winning streak with visit of Trojans (first games at Siebert Field?)...

Lee Corso to sign off as 'College GameDay' analyst in August

Remembering a few of the Minnesota-Indians games during his head coaching tenure—1976: opened the season on a beautiful day with a dominant, promising win—started the Big Ten 3-0 and led Iowa 12-0 at half time before a big 50,000 crowd & inexplicably fell apart to a lousy Hawkeye team which...

Curtis twins at St. Louis Park, how good are they?

I happened to have provided the color commentary for St. Louis Park public access for their game against Hopkins—boring all the viewers with stories of the Lloyd Holm-Butsie Maetzold rivalry. They’re athletic and could play the full length of the court at any of the positions if necessary...

    Chansey Willis Jr Commits

Pastor Luke Witte & Corky made their peace long ago. Corky dedicated his professional years to civil rights & the City of Minneapolis. He raised two fine sons. He passed away from cancer. Now, with all due respect, that’s a fuller picture of the life of Corky Taylor.

    Favorite Minnesota North Stars memories

Remembering an all-Minnesota Gopher hockey team had won the NCAA championship a couple weeks earlier. Speaking of Pete LoPresti he was the goalie for Denver when the Gophers beat them in the 1974 WCHA playoffs (a total goal series) on their way to their first NCAA title.

    Evans commits to North Carolina

UNC whips us in Chapel Hill in 2023. Dragan misses the game-winner at The Bank. Evans is snatched away in a blue-blood heist. The Monitor sinks off the North Carolina coast. My wife’s family from Greensboro is great fun, though.

    Bobby Durkin Commits

At the risk of a mild topic deviation—who was a dead-eye Gopher free throw shooter? I recall Bobby Jackson as clutch down the stretch in games.
