All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Other Games Thread

They’re doing this with basically only one player who wasn’t on the team last year, Tonje, and he plugged in for a similarly attacking player (Storr). They also lost big contributors in Hepburn and Wahl. It’s not an upgrade in personnel so much as it is a change in style.

Well, yes, but he’s probably 3rd in the line of stepper-uppers for that team after Tonje and Blackwell. But it’s no surprise - Wisconsin’s MO.

@MNVCGUY - are you now willing to admit that the scenario is playing out just as some of us thought it would if they managed to get to this point? You were pretty confident and dismissive of our viewpoints. They sweep PSU and NW and the chorus will grow louder.

All Things 2024-25 College Basketball Other Games Thread

Being in the rotation of a senior-laden fringe top ten team as a redshirt PWO freshman is actually pretty impressive. Janicki could end up being a pretty good piece for them moving forward as their seniors depart. Wisconsin really has a way of fitting their pieces together so that every player...

You want a "magic number" for Gophers to hear name called on Selection Sunday? Go with 22

Another factor the selection committee is looking at this year is "Wins Above Bubble". On Torvik, MN is currently -1.8, which is ranked in the 70s. That site also assigns WAB values to each remaining game. Sweeping PSU and NW only adds a combined 0.5 to the WAB. Interestingly, the away Nebraska...

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT UCLA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Mara played a lot more - and productively - for a stretch (pun intended) of about 5 games starting at the end of January, but less lately. When he’s in, he’s generally very high usage.

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT UCLA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

UCLA is #1 at causing turnovers in the country - when they don't get a turnover, offenses shoot relatively well against them. If MN can take care of the ball and hit a fair number of 3s, it could get interesting. I am a little concerned about their bigs, however - the 7'3" dude might feast.

Weakling Wednesday Final Weekend: Iowa @ Nebraska for the Final "Chair and a Chance"

I always try to be a little zen when something happens that seems like it should derail a season like Freeman going down. You just gotta say "we'll see". They played PU & UW close without him and beat RU on the road (also missing Thelwell in that one). It's not like the players behind Freeman...

Michael Rand Podcast: A listener wonders if Ben Johnson is getting a fair shake with Gophers

There are now agents who represent players - primarily those who are looking to transfer for a better deal, but maybe a few top HS players - and they are talking to coaches all the time. Rules? What rules?

Five Guys On A Shortlist: If the U Decides Change Is Needed, Aim High & Don't Be Cheap With That Big Ten Cash

If this true - and not doubting you at all - how does he have a job at McNeese? If they petitioned successfully, why would they deny Minnesota?

Gophers looking to do some 'soul searching' after biggest home loss in two years

They are still #25 in "Wins Above Bubble" thanks to beating TAMU, San Diego St., and Bama in the noncon. Their schedule lightens up considerably from this point forward.

Weakling Wednesday Final Weekend: Iowa @ Nebraska for the Final "Chair and a Chance"

There are a bunch o' teams in the mix to end up in the relegation zone - 9 teams currently between 3 and 5 wins for those 3 spots (no idea on the tiebreakers with that many teams). I am guessing Washington might make it out - their game at Iowa coming up a week from Saturday is a biggie.

Gophers looking to do some 'soul searching' after biggest home loss in two years

They did this kind of thing in the locker room after the Wisconsin game and then played much better the next few games. I guess that dose wore off. Let's see if it's as effective in the next dose or if the body's built up some immunity to it.

Reusse: Unlike the Gophers’ coaching situation, the solution for Williams Arena is simple: Blow up The Barn

Less than a mile from Marq campus to FiServ, and they've basically always played in that area through several arenas over the years. The walk from Middlebrook Hall to Williams Arena is a third of a mile longer.

Funny you say this - it's a pretty good description of how my professional mind works. It's sort of my job IRL to identify vulnerabilities and have a plan for avoiding bad or worst-case scenarios. If you wait for them to happen, it's too late.

I think you know I'm in the camp who thinks CBJ isn't a good coach. I think he deserves to be gone. I'm just anticipating the counter-narrative, which isn't rationally unreasonable (despite it being incessantly espoused by a lunatic poster) - i.e., a lot of this isn't his fault. The team made...

This USC game is winnable, especially if their best player Desmond Claude can’t go, and then they’re favored against NW and PSU. That’s a nonmiraculous 7 wins and smack dab in the gray zone, and they might even win a game in the BTT against another lower third team. You asked who other than...

    Fire Ben Johnson

I think they likely will make the BTT at this point. It may have more to do with other teams’ roster attrition, but that won’t show up in the standings. I think we need to be prepared that an argument will be made that this exceeds expectations given personnel.
