STrib: Ben Johnson has Gophers men's basketball winning with local talent, just like Mark Coyle envisioned

I guess Marcus and I (speaking for many) have different definitions of “winning”.

The best college basketball Cinderella story you won’t hear about in March (St Thomas Tommies)

it won’t happen every year. As I said they lost Rhode two years ago, nothing last year (ajani lee was close to nothing (akin to losing carrington / Henley). But they are filling out there roster with players from teams who are losing guys…the portal sucks should be the takeaway

Was just pointing out all teams have lost transfers...heck NDSU could have Grant Nelson still.

The best college basketball Cinderella story you won’t hear about in March (St Thomas Tommies)

They don't need a frank mitchell. They need a guy like this https://gojacks.com/sports/mens-basketball/roster/oscar-cluff/13269 Oscar Cluff - South Dakota State 6' 11" 260 C - but worked out of the FT line area and could pass and shoot, but also had a ton of low post moves. Averaged 17.6...

The best college basketball Cinderella story you won’t hear about in March (St Thomas Tommies)

UST got outclassed. Omaha had the best two players on the floor in the PG and Sutton. UST now knows what to go get in the portal now that they’re NCAA eligible.

UST also lost Rhode, you can’t just pick their opponents. The portal gives and takes from all teams now (it sucks)

There are people who still argue that Brandon Carrington is better...shocking

    Fire Ben Johnson

Silver lining...Ben's recent winning strike may make it easier for Coyle to find him a soft landing spot, similar to what Pitino got with New Mexico...maybe this will help in the decision process as it will chop some of the buyout money down with what the new school commits in Year 1 salary.

Marcus: What if struggling Gophers men’s basketball hadn’t lost key players because of NIL?

Carrington would still be bad, JoJ would still be making bone-headed plays and riding the pine, Payne would be playing decent for 65% of the time...then head scratching for the other 35% of the time (and that's before we see him shoot a FT), Hawkins is missed for being a floor general who can...

Ultimate Proof Ben is unfit to rule

I remember the conditioning drill we ran in hs, everyone would get on the line. Then each player would shoot a 1 & 1. If you miss the front end, it automatically counts as two down and backs. When the stat says 12/27, that really doesn’t show how bad it was as those are lots of front end’s of...

U of M basketball scheduling (Men & Women)

If it were me, we’d be playing some combo of these schools in the non-conference on the regular (by state)…own the Midwest, good for recruiting. Iowa (schools) - ISU - Drake - Northern Iowa Colorado Schools: - Colorado - Colorado St Nebraska Schools -Creighton Wisconsin Schools - Marquette...

A question Coyle/the new coach must answer

The counter-point is this; hasn't Coyle already articulated that of the ~$22M in total revenue to be shared amongst the teams, basketball will get about $2-4M (I thought he mentioned that). If that is the case, we'll still will be fighting the SEC, Big East, & ACC schools that have large donor...

What the future of Gopher’s basketball should be… a High-End Feeder program

I put this out there with the understanding that the Gophers will A) most likely never have the huge donors to offer massive NIL deals to 5 star freshmen, and (b) due to not having huge donors the players we do end up getting who show something in years 1 or 2, will get offered big contracts by...

What the future of Gopher’s basketball should be… a High-End Feeder program

I’m under no illusion UST will ever win a national title. Every 15 years a round of 32 or sweet 16, that would work. And let’s call a spade a spade, better teams are taking players at a greater rate from the gophers than they are UST…but it’s the rat wheel of the portal. Both the gophers and...

What the future of Gopher’s basketball should be… a High-End Feeder program

The Gophers need to a wholesale change to their basketball approach and I believe it is as follows: *Become a high-level feeder program to top-tier Blueblood programs / other high-end major P5 schools. Pitch HS recruits and freshman transfer targets on a two year system in which they knowingly...

If you were Asuma...what would you do?

After seeing the first 10 games of the season, we are starting to see a decent sample size of Asuma's freshman year. Some observations (they can change, but are grounded in reality); The Gophers will be at or near the bottom of the Big Ten, and he can't crack the starting lineup for terrible...
