But maybe we could recapture the magic from last years postseason run

Scoggins: Word is Mark Coyle wants to build Gophers men’s basketball. What does it mean for Ben Johnson?

Coyle will give a press conferences to tell us whether or not Ben will be the coach next year, and we will finish that conference with no idea whether or not Ben has been fired.

Poll: Should Mark Coyle give Ben Johnson a 5th year?

In what world would he deserve another year (absent hanging a banner by winning the BTT and making the NCAA tourney)? If Tubby's six year track record was worth firing, how historically good would Johnson's next two years need to be to be better than that after year six? We have a low bar based...

    Fire Ben Johnson

I can't believe that keeping him is even a serious consideration. I was in a weird place coming into this season. If we had gone .500 in the B1G, made the tourney, and been one and done I would still have felt like he had a very fire-worthy four year track record, but also felt like it would be...

Scoggins: Word is Mark Coyle wants to build Gophers men’s basketball. What does it mean for Ben Johnson?

Ive seen the last 25 years. I also know which coach has produced the worst results during the stretch. If we are going to emphasize that we have had a very poor 25 year run, it must take a special level of ineptitude to stand out as the low point if that quarter century.

Seth Davis: Ben Johnson has done an incredible job with this team. One of the elite coaches in one of the toughest jobs in America.

One that is giving even money on whether the next gopher mens basketball coach posts a big ten record better than 29%?

Seth Davis: Ben Johnson has done an incredible job with this team. One of the elite coaches in one of the toughest jobs in America.

If i could get even money that the next coach has a better B1G record than Johnson does, i would take that wager in an instant.

Seth Davis: Ben Johnson has done an incredible job with this team. One of the elite coaches in one of the toughest jobs in America.

Im still not sure I follow the "exceeded expectations" argument as one that is favorable to the coach. Between our coach's first three years with the team, how we looked out of conference, and the roster the coach built, people's predictions as to how we would perform in the big ten were so low...

SEC, Big Ten to push for seeding changes to 2025 College Football Playoff

After the way they fell flat on their face last year, it seems like the SEC shouldn't be taken seriously when they try to lobby for a format that gives them more favorable seeding.

+1 Similar to the drum I've been beating, even if it is a tough job, how is Seth getting around the fact that Ben is doing that job worse than anyone who has ever held it?

Seth Davis: Ben Johnson has done an incredible job with this team. One of the elite coaches in one of the toughest jobs in America.

Yep. Even if we buy the argument that the U is a uniquely difficult place to succeed at in basketball (i dont buy that it is inherently more difficult than at neighboring Wisconsin), that doesn't change the fact that Ben is doing significantly worse than his two predecessors at this challenging...

    2024-25 Gopher Hockey Season

I don't think the Nebraska comparison is quite on point. Nebraska had their glory years of national championships, followed by the Pelini years of good but not great (clearly second tier), and then alternating between mediocrity and legitimately bad. The Gophers have gone longer than I would...

    Fire Ben Johnson

If he pulled that off, id be in the camp to bring him back. Think that's the only way I wouldn't feel that firing is the only reasonable option

    Fire Ben Johnson

What his record actually is is bad enough. I don't see much value in holding close wins against him. If the trend were reversed, I also wouldn't give him credit for close losses. The team and the coach earned all of those wins.

    Fire Ben Johnson

Last years dramatic Cinderella postseason run to the second round of the NIT. Actually, probably the Michigan win his first year. There was genuine excitement, but that may have been the high water mark.

    Fire Ben Johnson

Very true, but it would still be an upgrade. Tubby and Pitino were both fired for performance, so we should not lose sight of the fact that performance that matches or is worse than Tubby's six year tenure should be a fireable offense.

Neal: Moving forward with Ben Johnson is the only option for Gophers men’s basketball

I am not a fan of using him taking a roster that was picked to finish last and bring somewhat competitive as an argument for keeping him. This is year four, so the roster is on him. Whether he assembles rosters picked to finish awful and then finishes just poorly, the result is the same as if he...

    2024-25 Gopher Hockey Season

One on one with a goalie in a live game is different than having all the time in the world for some gimmicky approach (swinging really wide, slowing down, etc) in a shootout. Id like to see us better at shootouts so we could earn the points, but scoring on a penalty shot or shootout is a...
