Scoggins talks to four coaches anonymously about the Gophers job

It's incredible the amount of time that's spent discussing the bare bones of the U's athletic department when we've been given numerous examples of a coach coming in and shifting the trajectory of a program. Good recruits and fans will follow a good coach, I don't think the best recruit in the...

Smith had a pretty good rep as a recruiter at Nebraska. He seems pretty personable, ton of energy, and can sell his resume of "Hey, I've won the conference everywhere I've been as a HC".

SDSU's improved their team 3PT shooting percentage every year since Dutcher has taken over as HC. 31.7% in Fisher's last year, now 38% from 3 in the past two seasons. Good mix of shooting and physicality on the interior.

Their half court sets are so clean. Tons of player and ball movement while active and vocal on defense. Even when they're in a funk in a game, the effort is there and heads don't drop. Short rotation but very connected group

I don’t see Indiana’s next hire being anyone we’re considering. They’ll go with someone who’s done well at the P6 level. I’m sure they’d test Chris Beard’s loyalty to Texas Tech or Drew’s to Baylor

    Next Gopher Head Coach

In looking for some in depth interviews with potential candidates, I came across The Basketball Podcast with Chris Oliver that went about 45 minutes to an hour long with Gates, Dutcher and Muss. This does a deep dive on their coaching philosophy and I think you get a feel for their personality...

You asked, we answered. Kendal Shell breaks down 10+ possible Gophers Coaching options

Oh I totally agree and am frustrated we didn’t land Roddy, my point was more about Medved who hasn’t proved a great deal in his coaching career yet. I included Roddy because people have talked about them as a package deal.

You asked, we answered. Kendal Shell breaks down 10+ possible Gophers Coaching options

I don't think Coyle will consider Ryan and I don't see him considering the U job but it's funny to watch people turn their nose up at Saunders. This is a guy with 10 years of NBA experience that's respected by some of the better coaches in the league, particularly Spoelstra and Carlisle. Half of...

Beilein has a son that took the job at Niagara a couple years ago but had to step down due to personal reasons, having him on staff and being his successor could potentially be a part of negotiations. May not be a factor but I guess something to keep in mind when considering him. manderson's...

10 most interesting options to replace Richard Pitino

It's not just fans, it's programs and coaches too. How many coaches are bouncing all over the country on their climb up the ladder? I think we're trying to project this idealistic view of college athletics that you can take a coach from anywhere, put together a staff from anywhere, build with...

You're the new coach. Assuming everyone "wants to come back. Who do you keep and who do you have the transfer portal talk with?

While I agree with your overall point, you need opportunity as well. Throughout the Pitino era, he's had six sometimes seven guys that he has blind faith in and then there's the others that are playing on pins and needles because one mistake gets them yanked. That was the case with Tre earlier...

You're the new coach. Assuming everyone "wants to come back. Who do you keep and who do you have the transfer portal talk with?

I would add Pohto to this list. Skilled kid with a Big Ten ready body that won't mind playing backup 5 minutes unlike most transfers. I think everyone else sticks around with Ihnen being the question mark, we've really mismanaged that kid's development.

Reusse: If Pitino had taken Wright from Champlin Park & not “Jelly Fam,” he wouldn’t be getting fired.

Carr looked well on his way to being Pitino's second first team all conference PG halfway through the season so it's hard to know how much more of an impact McKinley would have had as an individual. I doubt Pat is making this point but if he's talking about the bigger picture and referencing to...

Agreed, I think a top 3 would look something like Gates, Muss and Craig Smith in no particular order. I'd be pretty excited about any of those three.

Not really sure what I said that triggered this reaction from you but much of what I was talking about is basic recruiting strategy and that’s talked about across college athletics. I probably needed to be more specific in the point I was making so I appreciate the reply.

You're misinterpreting what I'm saying lol. My point was that if you want good players from other parts of the country, often times you have to prove you can develop your own (kids from your region) before recruits from other parts of the country show interest. It's a lot easier pulling an...

I don’t have any proof of this but just from following recruiting, I’d say most kids (66% and up) are from surrounding states. You have Duke, Kentucky and Gonzaga that recruit from anywhere but the core of pretty much every other program is fairly regional. Pick a random P6 school and look...

You have to earn the right to recruit nationally, it's not the other way around. It's great for people to say "I don't care where they come from as long as we win" but athletic departments have budgets and reality is that more often than not, you aren't convincing a kid halfway across the...
