RandBall: A new QB dilemma brewing: Tanner Morgan and the Gophers

To understand Morgan in 2019, you need to understand how good Bateman was. I didn't even fully appreciate it until I watched this video leading up to the draft. The one handed catches again SDSU and Rutgers - battling for the catch vs. Purdue, etc. He was really special. Most important...

    FMK: Fleck, Mason or Kill?

Maybe, maybe not. Fleck has his reputation due to recruiting. If we win 6 games or less this year and repeat again next year with a new QB, I think the recruiting halo may be gone. This is a 'what have you done for me lately' world and telling kids that you won 12 games back when they were in...

    FMK: Fleck, Mason or Kill?

Mason had a tiny fraction of the support here as PJ has - and Mason knew there was nothing he could do to change that. Thus, he was lazy in recruiting because the goal was to use us as a stepping stone so no point putting your heart and soul into recruiting. Unfortunately for him, he did not...

    Respond!

How about judging them by the body of work this season? Colorado game was dominant but we have 2 let downs vs. mid-majors and the prior year was nothing to write home about. Confidence in Fleck is based on 2019 - and the more you look at that team - the more you see a lot of individual talent...

    Worst loss in PJs tenure?

8-4 would be 6-2 down the stretch. I hope we can do that but seems very, very optimistic. 6-6 even seems optimistic. I think the only one I feel comfortable with right now is Illinois. If we go 6-6 or less this year, the wheels are officially off and next year will be chalked up to...

    Worst loss in PJs tenure?

Sadly, Brewster never had the resources and support that has been given to PJ. Also, he was a 1st time head coach. Not to say that Brewster got an unfair hand dealt to him, just that comparing anything Brewster to PJ in year 5 is a sad, sad sign.

    What is the Problem?

I agree that he is not going anywhere. I would also predict we are not either under him unfortunately. We are back to losing to mid-majors with a 4 year starter at QB. It would have been better to have Morgan play decent but had no run game so they could play the Mo injury card. This loss...

    What is the Problem?

To make the chili hot? I am having flashbacks.

    What is the Problem?

You cannot use rhythm as an excuse in a game you are favored to win by this much. You can play that card if you win by 10 when you are supposed to win by 20. This was a total collapse. It is sad that we are back to a Gopher season pretty much over before we hit October. Sorry, but this one...

    What is the Problem?

The problem is that we had inflated expectations for PJ as a coach and Morgan as a QB based on the Gophers having 2 NFL high caliber WRs on the team at the same time. It covered up a ton of our traditional deficiencies due to their playmaking - they could get separation and go up to get balls...

    Never again..

I give PJ a break over last year with covid, but this year we should not have so many struggles. The hardest position to get up to speed is QB so that will be the next excuse after Morgan is gone. I hope the team can come together and make a run this year. But, that would mean that our...

Fleck on Tanner Morgan having zero passing yards in the second half: “You gotta go by what’s happening on the field.”

That is the sign of him forcing it to establish some rhythm. At least his decision making is still sound - the stare downs and physical stuff can get fixed in season if the coaches give him an opportunity to use his skills.

Coaches lack trust in QB or WRs?

We are how many years into the PJF era and we have an experienced QB that had states legit comparable to Joe Borrow 2 years ago for pass efficiency, etc. - AND WE HAD ZERO PASSING YARDS IN A HALF. We have a good running game that we were able to fall back on - but the whole Miami comeback was...

Coaches lack trust in QB or WRs?

They were up by 2 scores the whole night - different story. We had a comeback that was basically stopped by a penalty pushing out the 2pt conversion attempt from tying the game. For Michigan, they got bailed out by an unsportsmanlike penalty against UW or their gameplan would have needed to...

Coaches lack trust in QB or WRs?

When he got hurt, I think that was incompletion #8 in a row or something like that. I don't recall many, if any, complete passes or attempts after that.

Coaches lack trust in QB or WRs?

I can understand wanting to run the ball and establishing an identity. But, Morgan was playing at a very high level 2 years ago and has looked like a shadow of that player the last 2 season. There were a ton of drops today which didn't help, but we need to have the QB be an asset to the team...

Coaches lack trust in QB or WRs?

When bad things started snowballing against us, they completely took the ball out of Morgan's hands and just ran every down. This is kind of concerning to me as we need Morgan to be leader and if we don't trust him to make a play vs Miami (OH), how can we against B1G competition? I wrote last...

***OFFICIAL MIAMI OF OHIO AT MINNESOTA IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Morgan is a big part of the problem here. This Miami team got curb stomped last week and our offense looks terrible now. Morgan is regressing and I hate to see it.

Hole Poll: After the Ohio State game, the Gophers are?...

To me, I think we are a top 35 team in the nation. Not too bad. We did some things nice, looked outclassed in other ways. Matching to OSU is kinda unfair as they don't really have short-season covid rust like most of the B1G. It will be interesting to see how the other teams actually look...

***OFFICIAL OHIO STATE AT MINNESOTA SEASON OPENING IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

I agree with you. And my initial post was not a knock on Morgan - more a commentary about how he played 2 years ago where national media were placing in the top college QB conversations. We are 1+ seasons removed from that and I think he has more or less fallen off the radar. I think he will...
