Brandon Johnson enters the Transfer Portal

I wouldn't say on the cheap (a quick relative comparison of some of the Big10 coaches): Coach, School Starting Salary HC Exp At Hire Other Notables Greg Gard, Wisconsin $ 638,000 Coach or Assistant coach for 25 years prior to hire, WI Assoc HC for 7 yrs Richard Pitino, Minnesota $...

Here's the issue: Since 2014 there have been 17 MN-born 4-star recruits, Gophers signed 3 of them

Of course it isn't a problem when you are winning. It is among the problems when you are not.

    Gabe to Iowa State

Ha. We will have a much better idea of what a Ben Johnson program will look like a year from now MplsG. One way or another, we will be on a certain trajectory. Words are great, results are easier to decipher.

Things are different at the margin. The biggest change is people using analytics without the context of the analytics. It is pure foolishness. What will never change is good coaches put players in a position to succeed (from practice, to communications, to style, to role, to game situations, etc).

A bunch of people behind keyboards taking down young people who are trying their best; what a sad state (not geographically speaking).

Tomorrow's Big Ten will look different than today's. Chasing current approaches will always make you a chaser. If you are copying someone else's approach you are typically just a cheap replica because you don't have what they have.

    Gabe to Iowa State

How about people just wish him well without the digs. He clearly knows how to play the game. He is a smart player and smart players have a way of figuring it out. Hopefully he can get it done for Iowa St.

Exactly. If you don't know how to keep the kids you want, you probably don't deserve them. Most of these players have given their life to the game, I think it is fair for them to want get the most out of it.

The good thing about all of this is everyone will see soon enough. Mights, almosts and could have beens don't matter. I don't know how anyone can judge anything until this year's class is set and then the season begins. On that matter, Johnson will be judged on everything, just like his...

Let's just wish him good luck. Great work Jamal, keep on working!

    Why all the disappointment?

As someone with experience, to a large extent you either "have it" or you don't. That may be the consternation about a pretty good or safe hire. A person could play basketball for 30 years and a 16 year-old could be better. You can do art for a lifetime and a kid could be better at it. You...

Holmgren has not been contacted yet...

It is funny how people know the motivations of others. When you or your kid(s) are the top recruit, you can do it your way. Until then, how about let a high school kid make a choice at their leisure.

Coyle's miscalculations as I see them

The reality: It is basically impossible for the average fan to weigh in on the hire from a background perspective. What can people actually judge? Ben is not a really big name in MN sports and was an assistant coach. People have to trust Coyle, which is obviously tough. The AD should do Ben a...

    GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

Coyle took a big risk with this hire for sure. He will eventually look like a genius or a fool. Clearly Ben knows how to sell...his first head coaching gig is in the Big Ten. Selling top recruits should be a far easier sell!

    GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

Why does everyone need to be compared to someone? He is not Howard. He is not Whalen. He is not Pitino. He is not Brewster. He is not Fleck. I am not remotely sure how some of these comparisons are even being made. Given Ben's limited discernable history from a fan's perspective, Coyle should...

    GOPHERS HIRING BEN JOHNSON

If you hired him, trust him -- otherwise you hired the wrong person. Tough crowd. Not much of a track record to rate him by, but let's let him speak before you go too off your rockers. Certainly a risky hire, right after a risky hire. Time will tell, but let's be welcoming. Get it done Ben!

3 factors spelled doom for Pitino's tenure here (#3. Fleck might have been the worst thing to happen to Pitino's career.)

"Might" and "could", the worst words in modern "journalism". Anything could be true. Perhaps the author should look at the rest of the Big Ten and tenure for coaches with losing records in the conference.
