Doogie says Payne got “north of $500K, more than entire Gophers” payroll

I don't see any scenario that makes large NIL payments go away. Schools can pay players whatever they want, but that won't stop boosters at many schools from adding to that. Collectives as they operate today may change or go away, but there's nothing to stop the outside money from flowing in.

    Cavs fire Bickerstaff

Hoiberg went from college, where he was successful, to the NBA, where he wasn't very successful and was fired, before returning to college -- probably because he wasn't going to get another NBA job soon. Plus, that was before college BB became the shitshow it is now. I think most coaches are...

Action Network HQ has the Gophers winning five games.

It always sucks to see us so low, but we'll have a whole bunch of chances to beat teams listed above us and prove them wrong.

HOW LONG WITH THIS BUYING PLAYERS TREND LAST?

It's not likely that a school will decide not to play the NIL game. However, I think it's very likely that donors will get tired of giving. Thank god for people like Bob Klas, Dana and Katie Harms, Julie Jensen and Larry Shelley -- donors mentioned in the Strib article about this yesterday...

    Seat license

It's a good idea. I doubt that it's allowed, but I'm only guessing. If it's not allowed, maybe DTA donations could at least be applied to our Gopher loyalty score.

Gopher Basketball Portal Money - $1 Million

Here's how I look at it. in the 1990s Williams Arena was the best venue in town -- full and loud. The Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight runs started it and made it feel like we were on the verge of something big. But the next six seasons -- 90-91 through 95-96 -- we were about .500 and lived on the...

Oregon transfer Brennan Rigsby commits to MN

This is how I feel about it. My feelings about Carrington leaving were that you can find a lot of guys to do the same thing. Rigsby can replace Carrington's role and play some PG when needed. I'm assuming -- hoping -- he isn't our starting point guard but will be a valuable contributor.

    All Things Transfer Portal Thread

If Lindsey came in thinking we'd roll into the 2024 season with two scholarship quarterbacks, or that a third would be happy to sign up as only a backup during his entire Gopher tenure, that's on him. I find it hard to believe Fleck would make him believe that. I think there will QBs who are...

Video: P.J. Fleck says Gophers spring football is 'about bringing the floor up'

I guess I don't agree it's been that bad since the new stadium opened. When the stadium is mostly full, it's typically mostly Gopher fans. Do a lot of Badger and Husker fans get in? Of course. And I admit that it seemed like a lot more of them last year (and Michigan fans). But I don't think it...

Matt Birk: If college athletes enter the transfer portal they shouldn't be eligible for NIL money.

In the NFL, a team would probably be punished harshly. There's not much fear of that in college.

Strack: PJ Fleck, Gophers Managing Portal Era Talent Better than Most Big Ten Teams

Four new portal exits for us so far this morning, so those numbers are officially old.

Video: P.J. Fleck says Gophers spring football is 'about bringing the floor up'

Last season was extremely disappointing, but we're not OSU and Michigan, who can reload each year or mid-season. Fleck has elevated the talent, but we'll still have a down year occasionally and I can live with that. But we need to rebound this year.

    Spring Practice Observations

Since PJ was an NFL wide receiver when he wasn't a social studies teacher (and he had two all-Big Ten WRs early on), the lack of game-changing receivers over the past four years is all the more disappointing.

Payne in portal (UPDATED: Payne commits to Texas A&M)

I think you could make the case that it has helped their football team quite a bit. They've cycled through four basketball coaches since 2006. Big money helps, but you still need the right leadership to make it work.

Poll : Mandel states NIL era has “not been a debacle”

I would say the NCAA's poor communication about NIL rules -- or maybe it's enforcement -- has been a debacle (in addition to free transfers). I've heard Coyle and his guy in charge of NIL, not to mention Derek Burns of Dinkytown Athletes, say multiple times that NIL is not supposed to be for...
