2024-25 Big Ten Free Agent Signings

From what I understand, Hawkins is testing the NBA waters and did this in order to have options if he doesn't get the evaluation he's hoping for. If you don't do that, Illinois has all the leverage in determining his NIL value because there can't be any other offers. This is why it would be...

    BREAKING: Elijah Hawkins to transfer

For those of you who were upset with the previously unnamed school who may have/probably tampered with Hawkins after he previously said "I'm back": Are you mad at that no-good, rotten, cheatin' Texas Tech? Will you be mad if MN pulls the exact same thing with a Charlotte player? This is the...

    Gopher Potential Portal Pursuits

Grove decommitting? That would fit into the category of good/bad/indifferent.

2024-25 Big Ten Free Agent Signings

All 3 of the Badgers' portal gets were injured last year. Might be a case of scratch and dent inventory being priced at a discount.

    Disillusionment

Is it more difficult? Undoubtedly. But, it's also very likely that roster turnover is the new normal. Adapt or die.

    Disillusionment

This is why I brought up Moneyball. Teams without the biggest payroll can compete if they have a plan and execute it. It's still better to be the big payroll team, but there are lots of examples of teams punching above their weight in all sports.

    Disillusionment

My point is that you can’t count on your best players coming back. That will be true of 90% of programs. Of course it would be better to develop from year to year, but the roster turnover makes that very difficult. Coaches have to adapt and learn how to maximize what they have THIS year, and...

    Disillusionment

To help me understand this better, tell me how this would work in practice for: a) Christie, b) Payne, c) Hawkins, d) Carrington.

    Disillusionment

see post #92. All successful coaches going forward have to excel with a roster of one-year players. No more embracing the suck or laying foundations. This is the #1 requirement because the roster is always going to be volatile. For high-majors like MN, no more recruiting HS players who won't...

    Disillusionment

I think Minnesota has to come to terms with the fact that they have to play Moneyball for the foreseeable future. They won’t be able to ever have the NIL budget to get the proven commodities. That then requires a coaching staff that can identify a group of players that they can afford and whose...

    Disillusionment

It can simultaneously be true that the roster situation is not his fault and he’s not a good coach. Please name 9 worse coaches in the league (the number it would take to be average).

All Things Gophers 2024-25 Schedule Updates

Yes, they cannot be worse than last in the country. They could try to have a worse average ranking of opponent, though. Let's see if he can do it. I think he'll try.

All Things Gophers 2024-25 Schedule Updates

With 14 single-plays, I don't really think competitive balance is impacted much however you do it. When we had 7 double-plays, 3 away and 3 home, the league was more susceptible to a scheduling imbalance by who you played only once.

All Things Gophers 2024-25 Schedule Updates

Would you think the 3 home and away opponents for the 4 newcomers will be each other? That would make sense to me to be true every year, but maybe the conference is thinking differently.

Payne in portal (UPDATED: Payne commits to Texas A&M)

Not specifically aimed at you, but I've seen some comments about being against intra-conference transfers. I'll point out that MN just got one of those from Oregon.

    BREAKING: Elijah Hawkins to transfer

Maybe it was a typo, but your previous post said 5%, not 50%, and that's what prompted me to reply. Agree that not all starters are of equal importance, but certainly those I put in my list were roughly equivalent to the Hawkins and/or Payne losses. Some of those guys were on the list of...

    BREAKING: Elijah Hawkins to transfer

I'm not really trying to weigh in to the bigger fight going on here, but off the top of my head in the B10, you've got Perkins from Iowa and Omoruyi and Mag at Rutgers leaving for bigger paydays (perhaps other factors at play, too). OSU lost Gayle, Key, and Okpara and Michigan lost McDaniel...

    BREAKING: Elijah Hawkins to transfer

That Leicester year was a complete outlier (and fantastic). I think of the big 6 as the two Manchesters, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. Add Newcastle as a johnny-come-lately to the big spenders. The list I'm looking at has those as the top 7, all above 565m euros. The richest of the...

Payne in portal (UPDATED: Payne commits to Texas A&M)

Well, taking away any of the NIL influence, I think Buzz Williams and Payne might be a pretty good match. I don't know how well a lifelong Minnesotan does in College Station, though - a completely different vibe. That seems to matter less these days, though.
