NCAA Basketball: 10 coaches who will face the most pressure entering 2024-25 season (Ben Johnson, Minnesota)

I get why people are in the "tourney bid or he's gone" camp. In the era before NIL, there's no question I'd be in it, too. Everyone knows, however. that there are extenuating circumstances that make that goal a stretch. Unless the NIL/player compensation situation changes - which is possible -...

    Ken Evans Jr. campaign thread!

I would suggest maybe saving some of the NIL funds isn’t an awful idea given the roster situation after this season.

SI: Way too early 2024-25 Big Ten men's basketball power rankings (15. Minnesota)

Have you figured out how to cheat in basketball like you did in football? What’s Connor Stalions up to these days?

2024-25 Big Ten Free Agent Signings

Not a signing, but I see that Coleman Hawkins opted out of the draft and intends to go to a new school that has a good football team and can pay him 7-figures.

    Cam.....what will he do

I voted NBA like most others. My thinking has evolved on this, though - I thought there was a reasonably high chance that his evals would lead him to be in the fringe of not being drafted. In that scenario - given that he put on a "no contact" tag when he entered the portal - I thought there was...

Minnesota native Lu’Cye Patterson commits to the Gophers

There’s no selling wait until next year anywhere anymore. This turnover is the new normal. Let’s be realistic. Most people seem to think this roster is not a tournament team. Maybe not even a *Big Ten* tournament team. Most people also understand the school’s NIL situation puts limitations on...

Minnesota native Lu’Cye Patterson commits to the Gophers

What I see is that people both think 1) they need to make the NCAAs for Johnson to keep his job, and 2) they’ll be battling to make the BTT. The expectations are so low that I don’t think the first part is really true. If MN ends up 9-11 again, it will be seen as a wildly successful coaching job.

Minnesota native Lu’Cye Patterson commits to the Gophers

If you don't understand that tempo has nothing to do with defense, you do not understand basketball. You're not insane, just ignorant. Defense (and offense, btw) is most meaningfully measured by points per possession, not points per game. That aforementioned Jordan Taylor-led Wisconsin team was...

Will we improve defensively? What makes for good defense?

This is a good topic, thanks for starting it. IMO, coaching is easily more than half of it. The other things are important, but give me a set of 5 guys playing as a connected team who hedge when they're supposed to hedge, switch when they're supposed to switch, and slide over to help when...

SEC/Big Ten top Early Power Rankings

This made me think about how each team did vs. their preseason rank last year, and Torvik has the "T-rank time machine" that allows you to do that. 11 out of 18 were worse than expected, some significantly worse. It matches my perception about Woodson's ability to actually coach...

Does it pay to recruit high school kids?

The bolded remains to be seen. Right now, with all the experience and proven production that was brought in from the portal and Fox staying, I don't see him high in the rotation. But, he could surprise. Anything's possible.

Does it pay to recruit high school kids?

In a word, no. Right now, he's a crapshoot. If he doesn't play year one (which is the likely scenario IMO), he's highly likely to transfer to a lower level. Every player not named Betts has done this. So, taking your likelihood question literally, more players transfer these days than stay, so...

Does it pay to recruit high school kids?

This is a key question and doesn't have a straightforward answer, except to say that I think it's still wise to develop relationships with HS players and their families - they might go somewhere else first, but I would think you have a better shot for getting them as a transfer if they already...

    Potential Non-Conference Tournaments for Gophers

Just reminding folks that a neutral site game that’s a Q1 means it’s against a top 50 team. WF may be fringey in that regard, but it is nonetheless a palatable P5 opponent.

STrib: Gophers men's basketball roster has entirely different look after transfer portal exodus

One of the things that hints at individual defensive prowess - for bigs - is rebounds. Most rebounds come at the defensive end, and, by definition, a defensive rebound ends the opponent's possession with zero points. Based on the breakdown above, Frank and Femi should be welcome additions. The...

Has College Basketball Turned into a Boring sport?

I shouldn't even engage here, but... Boring it's not. You've just lost hope. Not surprising if you're a fan of a program like MN. The NBA has been basically the same product for a decade, but locals have just now noticed. Hint: winning breeds interest.

2023-2024 College Basketball Coaches Hired/Fired Thread

You and I and the entire board know that there's a lot more at stake here than at UWGB. Then again, taking a big, unorthodox swing might not be the worst idea at MN either. Dawn Staley is a pretty good coach....

2023-2024 College Basketball Coaches Hired/Fired Thread

That's a good point (bolded). However, I think the scrutiny is a lot higher in the P5 level, and probably also the time spent with public appearances and the media. Your extra time is just less. As to why hire him, it's certainly unorthodox, but again, this is UWGB and the Horizon League. Why...

Cam Christie #8 in top players uncommitted in Transfer portal.

Honest question - if you're not a lottery pick, is it worth it to stay in the draft? I think that was the rule of thumb a few years ago, but it should seem even moreso with all the NIL $ at the college level. It's very possible that the NBA contracts are better now, though.

2023-2024 College Basketball Coaches Hired/Fired Thread

Given your username, can I assume that you are a WYO guy in some way? I don't follow them anymore, but still have family in Laramie. I think the portal is really tricky for conferences like the MWC - a couple of schools have had some success (notably the Aztecs), but the best players and...
