    I’ve never been more optimistic

Teams can improve dramatically as a season develops. In 2000, the Gophers lost at home to Ohio University in September and then beat Ohio State in Columbus in October.

    The exact same Gophers

The inability to separate by our receivers cannot be overstated. I am watching multiple games today and see other teams get guys open for easy catches. In our passing game, nothing comes easily and it has been that way since Johnson and Bateman left. Could it be that the design of pur passing...

    The reason we lost

I have noticed over the years that huge Gopher offensive lines excel at run blocking but are generally not athletic enough to pass block adeptly.

100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium approaching November 15--favorite memories...

I was in the 2nd grade in 1956. My dad loved the Gophers and that season I kept hearing that the Gophers might go to something called the Rose Bowl. My uncles were excited and even the nuns who taught us at Assumption School in Richfield talked about them. They were sturdy Benedictines from near...

100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium approaching November 15--favorite memories...

The Gophers trailed Purdue 6-0 in the 4th quarter and did not exactly have a dynamic offense. They got one terrific play when they had to have it. A kid named Duane Blaska from Anoka threw an absolutely perfect pass between 2 defenders at the 10-yard line to a guy named Ray Zitzloff. And that...

TOP 5 Golden Gophers Football Players of ALL TIME

Nomellini was a man among boys as a Gopher and an NFL monster with insane durability.

How the Golden Gophers spent a decade running without making any progress

Actually, the game that gave the 2006 Gophers their 6th win and bowl eligibility was not against Illinois. It was against Iowa. It was the game in which Drew Tate stomped off the field like Rumpelstiltskin after throwing a terrible goal line interception right to Mike Sherels right before...

Former Gopher coach Dan Monson fired by Long Beach State

Thank you for correcting me but I am sure there was some disappointing bench time that contributed to an uninspired performance vs. the lowly Pilots.

    Cashman coming home

IAs many of you doubtless recall, in 2018 the Gopher defense was a mess until Rossi suddenly found the right buttons to push. Purdue came to town with their clever schemes and things looked bleak. When I come back to Minnesota to see the Gophers once a year, I always hope for interesting...

Former Gopher coach Dan Monson fired by Long Beach State

I was there to see the Gophers lose to Portland. Earlier that day, D. Joseph and Andre Hollins reportedly got into some kind of "disagreement" at either Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm. Both missed minutes as a disciplinary measure and the Gopher sleep-walked to a loss against a WCC doormat.

Cam Christie = a young Quincy Lewis

In another era I would be thrilled by this team that has no seniors (provided that Fox can come back). Hate to say it but my ability to enjoy the present is tempered by the possibility/likelihood that the big fish will "purchase" some of our kids, now that they have shown they can play.

Izzo on MN: But now, they're damn good. I mean, they're good enough to be an NCAA tournament team. Theyre good enough to compete in the BT every night

Nice to hear Izzo say something nice about Minnesota. In past losses to the Gophers, his compliments felt kind of back-handed and condescending. I didn't see the game. Did he stomp around and have tantrums when things did not go well? How about ref-baiting and whining for calls?

***OFFICIAL MINNESOTA AT PENN ST IN-GAME THREAD!!!***

Gophers did what Bo Ryan preached long ago. Make more free throws than the opponent attempts. But what has to be done to make this happen? Attack the basket & play disciplined team defense. Easy to talk about, not easy to achieve.

One of the best CFP semi-finals ever?

I wonder if his 2 serious knee surgeries will scare off some NFL teams. Would the Vikings roll the dice and trade up? Will Penix fell far enough to be available if they keep their #1?

    The Final Straw

Gophers up 24-0 just before halftime. They give up a blocked punt touchdown, NC State gets the 2-point PAT, then dominates the second half behind a freshman quarterback named Philip Rivers. Tellis Redmond runs for about 230 yards for Minnesota. The holes are still there in the 2nd half but, in...

    Two Point Try

PJ went for two early vs. West Virginia two years ago in Arizona with Annexstad's brother and it worked. This time it felt like he was kind of letting Kesich have some fun as a reward for a great season.

Saturday Tradition: Our way to early 2024 Big Ten Power Rankings (16. Minnesota)

Thank you, but not really feeling any angst. Just noting that lazy media types generally love to simply recycle last year's results in their forecasts. Unfortunately, in this new landscape where money talks more openly, it is easier for them to be right without investing much effort. I have...

Saturday Tradition: Our way to early 2024 Big Ten Power Rankings (16. Minnesota)

This is so predictable. Even when the Gophers come off a good season, the pundits are generally unimpressed. A bad season seems to erase prior successes and the Gophers have to start from scratch in rebuilding credibility. Granted, the Big 18 is now more challenging but the negativity here seems...
