At a minimum you need enough good players to practice. The better the players are whom the starters have to play against, the faster they will develop period. And you don't want players jumping in who are injured etc. We need depth to run practices. We need depth to give injured players...

This is not true. You absolutely need role players and the hard part is keeping players whose role is to not start.
