In case anybody missed it: Caitlin Clark went #1 in the WNBA Draft. :)

Some mock drafts had Sara Scalia getting drafted in the third round. She did not get drafted. I wonder if the Lynx will sign her for a tryout?

    2024-2025

That was 20 years ago. Recruitment has changed from local to national to international. Successful teams now are drawing players from a wide geographic area. I first got interested in women's basketball when I was at Texas Tech. I watched the Lady Raiders win the national championship in...

    Transfer Portal 2024

You are partly right that non-athletes can transfer at any time. However, non-athletes are very constrained because they would lose scholarship monies and they would lose time towards graduation. Many schools allocate most of their scholarship monies to incoming freshmen and not much to transfer...

    2024 Gopher Spring Schedule

I think Shaff is firmly entrenched as setter. I think Stella could see considerable time in the back row given her passing skills. And, I hope Stella gives Shaff some relief as setter so Shaff doesn't wear down during long matches and the long season. Shaff was an iron woman last season.

What grade would you give Gophers in Coach P’s first season?

I would give them a C. They deserve a B for part of the season and a D for the other part, which averages to a C. They are an excellent mid-major team. I don’t think there is enough upside potential with the current roster to make them a great Power Five team. I think they need to recruit a...

WNIT Championship Game: Gophers versus St. Louis (4-6-24) @SIUE

Uffda. They were so slow. No ball movement. They catch the ball and think, and think, and think until all options are gone. St. Louis had an excellent game plan. I am not sure that Minnesota had a game plan. Fortunately, only Minnesota and St. Louis fans saw this game.

#7 Gophers vs. #2 Boston University - NCAA Regional Final

Bob, recruit some players who like to play defense. We have enough players who want to score a lot so they get bigger contracts in the NHL. And, recruit a goalie who doesn't lose his focus.

    Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season - Part 3: Playoffs

It is a difference in recruiting. It is the Lake Wobegon effect--all our children are above average. We are slow in transitioning from the "We can win with all Minnesota kids" to realizing that hockey is becoming more national and international and there are a lot of outstanding hockey players...

B1G Tourney Game 1: Gophers Versus Rutgers (2-6-24)

Nice to get the win. They should be guaranteed to finish the season no worse than .500. That is a little progress.

B1G Game 18: Gophers Visit Penn State

You can't lose two starters with a shallow bench and expect a team to be super competitive. You can't make players suddenly into 3-point shooters or make shooters good at driving to the basket. But, there must be something that they can focus on and get better at like passing or defense.

    Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season - Part 3: Playoffs

Great win. Good all-around play. It would be wonderful if yesterday was a wakeup call and the Gophers play at this level the rest of the season.

Good win today. The game was a rumble.

Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season -- Part 2: The Regular Season

Friday's game was excellent. Two piping hot goalies. Outstanding effort by both teams. Playing UMD is like playing a tournament game. Good preparation for the tournaments. I hope the Gophers can lift their games a notch for the tournaments. Go Gophers.

Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season -- Part 2: The Regular Season

Tough loss. Gophers left a lot on the ice yesterday and the Badger played like some pressure was off today. Gophers played hard but just did not connect on opportunities. They need to remain positive and continue to improve. They can make a good run in the tournaments.

    B1G Game 14: Gophers Host Northwestern (2-17-24)

Gophers needed that win. Good all around play. I hope they can build on today's success and forget the bad games.

Women's Hockey 2023-24 Season -- Part 2: The Regular Season

Excellent game between two top teams. Lot's of great plays. Tough to lose. Gophers needed to recoup for tomorrow and keep improving for the tournaments.

    B1G Game 13: Gophers visit Rutgers (2-13-24)

I don't equate Impact Player and Leader. They could be the same but sometimes are not. A Leader is a player who fosters team chemistry, inspires the team with their work ethic, energy, and spirit, encourages teammates, helps teammates adjust to college and basketball, sets good examples, etc...

    B1G Game 13: Gophers visit Rutgers (2-13-24)

We have a bunch of good young players. What we lack is an Impact Player; i.e., a player that can put the team on her back and/or lift the team when it is really needed; a player with lots of dimensions to her game and can beat you more than one way depending on what is or isn't working. We...

    B1G Game 13: Gophers visit Rutgers (2-13-24)

You Know You Are in Trouble When: you have to play your starters a huge amount of minutes against a team like Rutgers. Heyer, 40 minutes, GG, 39, Battle, 34, Hart, 33, and Sanders, 26. Heyer was very active and productive in the first half but wore down, Hart should play no more than 28...

    B1G Game 13: Gophers visit Rutgers (2-13-24)

Disappointing. The only thing uglier than the play in the first half was the officiating. The effort by the Gophers was excellent. However, the Gophers don't have enough contributions from the bench and the starters have to play too much and get run down.
