All Things Immaculate Grid-related (MLB, NBA, NFL)

I could have cruised towards one of my best all-time scores if not for the %$&* Diamondbacks as one of the teams (although former Twin Eduardo Escobar garnered .8% as their 2B. For the Twins, these guys combined for 1.13%:

Help me out everyone--have bullpen games always been a thing? When did they start gaining prominence? Coming up as a fan through the '80s and '90s, I don't ever recall such a thing--and then I admittedly have tailed in and out through the years of closely following the game, especially on the...

One of my pet theories is that the NFL is only the monster it is largely because fantasy football fuels that fire (and the weekly games set up so much better for fans versus the other sports in keeping up/paying attention for fans).

Yesterday’s NFL board (#365) had me checking if it was Adrian Peterson’s birthday—he would have worked for all 9 squares on the grid.

Bob Newhart, Comedy Icon, Dies at 94

Not meaning to get off track here, but I think you could fill up a full day's of classic sitcom Thanksgiving episodes and be stretched to complete it within 24 hours. It's the holiday that sets up best for humor--doesn't have the mawkishness of Christmas episodes nor the faux spookiness of...

Bob Newhart, Comedy Icon, Dies at 94

I loved the Bob Newhart Show in reruns (the group therapy scenes are upper echelon sitcom moments) and Newhart was so effing funny throughout the’80s. One of the kings of TV.

If there’s one player who needs a reassessment and admission to the HOF, it’s Sweet Lou Whitaker in my book. He’s smack dab in the middle of the HOF 2B’s from statistically point of view, was part of an iconic double play combo for 10+ years that included a World Series win and he’s gotten...

Trout, Verlander, Scherzer, Kershaw, Stanton, Altuve? Judge, Ohtani, Harper in the wings? Edit: I also missed on Freeman and Votto. I’m a big fan of Votto, but looking at his overall numbers, he seems borderline to me. Freeman seems more assured, as he’s still putting up numbers and you can...

We had a lot of similarities today Ope-Rose, Seaver, Blyleven (as a Pirate)-that led me to a score of 210, as with you, likely my highest score for an immaculate board. As for the Twins: -early ‘80s closer who was a fire starter not a fireman) -mid ‘70s standout whose life was tragically cut...

Redbox going out of business - no more DVD rentals at the grocery store

Perhaps it's nostalgia, but it also dovetails into my soapbox theory that so much of our social fabric which was dependent on stepping out into public venues and is now replaced by never having to leave home has contributed to the crumbling of our social connections. When I was in HS, I'd often...

Today's grid allowed me to dive into one of my favorite factoids I learned recently because of I.G. A couple of weeks ago, the Brewers reliever Jerry Augustine popped into my head (I think it was the "pitched at least one game" and I did a bit of background on him and turns out he spent his...

    2024 ESPYS

One of my biggest laments about being overseas is watching live sports (that I care about). But the Olympics are pretty awesome because it’s just about the sports; little time is spent on human interest stories, it’s just cutting from one sport to another and watching stuff that brings me back...

    2024 ESPYS

Maybe an easy stance to take since I've lived overseas for the last 16 years but I'm proud to say I've never watched an ESPY's show (it joins the Kardashians show in this category). I've always thought that sports is the one arena where awards shows were pretty much pointless because, well...

    Who's Your Side Show Bob's?

After listening to Ted Danson and Woody Harrelson on Conan O’Brien’s podcast recently, I was reminded of Henri, Kelly’s French friend who was always mocking Woody with the “I’m going to steal your girlfriend” line. And I am surprised that I missed and no one else mentioned Tammy 1 from Parks &...

Mike Gundy seemingly admitting to driving under the influence "a thousand times in my life" in defense of star player's DUI arrest.

Gundy is 56 years old and looks every bit of his age—as if he teleported in from the 1970’s. Of course this is par for the course for him and all his prior controversies have done nothing to make him adjust his ways, I doubt this will either.
