    Gopher Softball 2022

Considering the bad weather and the time of year, yesterday's crowd vs. St. Thomas was impressive indeed. Gophers won 6-1 on 5 unearned runs & not much hitting. Kind of an emotionless, workaday performance, but nice to see the new blood on the field. Leavitt pitched 7 innings. The Gophers' CA &...

    Gopher Softball 2022

I watched Hostettler warm up in the bullpen before the UMD game; her pitches were as far off the plate there as during the game; she looked a bit nervous or bothered, but I liked her physical size and variety of pitches. Lots of changeups where I thought she could've relaxed and beaten those...

    Gopher Softball 2022

She pitched an inning v. Dakota Wesleyan & threw nothing but strikes over the middle of the plate. V. UMD she was not in control of her pitches. It seemed she was going to be 4th on the staff behind Pease, Dueck, & Leavit. That's a possible consideration. Sad development.

    Gopher Softball 2022

It seems we all pretty much agree on what we've seen in fall ball '21. Some really nice defense, infield & outfield, plus Dray's catching of Hostettler, whose 7 innings of pitches in the dirt Dray dug out wonderfully w/ only one passed ball (in my informal count). The curse of the past 2 seasons...

I was watching her stroke closely on the moonshot mentioned above. It was quick, soft, & made w/ apparent ease, but the ball exploded off her bat.

I shared your 'down' feeling, especially after they lost games to Iowa & PSU & didn't show up v. MI. No real run production. Different vibes this fall ball. No idea how the '22 team will fare, but the players' capabilities seem promising. Hope for the best!

    Gopher Softball 2022

Watching fall ball convinces me the Gophers have brought in some really talented recruits. In pitching, Piper seems to be grooming LEAVITT to do lots in the circle. Despite her rocky start v. UMD, HOSTETTLER seems to have the stuff to succeed, gave up only 4 hits, though always behind in...

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

Stunned? Maybe. Or more like mystified, at the Gophers seeming to bid farewell to their season with a puzzling performance. They could've put a stranglehold on the match in set 4, but fell asleep.

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

Very interesting & insightful. I think what most of the MINNESOTA FANS, as you mention, wonder about is: How did these shortcomings with middles, weaker passing, and errant setting come about in the past 2-3 years?

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

The MN VB program, as it's established itself, should not be "losing to who they should lose to." There shouldn't be anybody they should lose to.They should be playing absoulutely even with the elite and beating everybody else. Why is this not happening? (Maybe a certain dissension that grew up...

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

A lot of the criticism in various posts is thought provoking. I thought the Gophers teams led by Santana, Wilhite, the Tapps, Hart, SSS, early Samedy, etc., were fiery & aggressive. Those fiery traits seemed to cool (for whatever reasons) after the Gophers beat WI for the 2nd time in the 2018...

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

I thought the Gophers looked slow on the attack & generally inferior as though the program is plateauing rather than rising to beat the best. Wish I knew enough about VB to analyze why I felt that way watching the match. My opinion anyway.

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

Maryland's weekend has a good tennis analogy: A really good player can beat a Nadal one wknd. He can also beat a Djokovic one wknd. Nobody is likely to beat both Nadal AND Djokovic in the same wknd. Maryland VB faced the no. 2 & 9 ranked teams in one weekend. One win is pretty spectacular...

    Gopher Softball 2022

I agree about Chavez. Very impressive; great fielding, speed to burn; sizewise she looked like a waif, but she hit a homerun that left the park in a huge hurry. Another Partain? If the opponents' pitching had been better, Evans' performance at the plate would've gone down as a career day...

    Gopher Softball 2022

Defensively I'd say newcomers Chavez, Dowell, & Valencia all looked like extremely accomplished infielders. Then there are Costa, Dray, and Strelow returning. (They all had a great day hitting but the pitching by Wesleyan was mediocre at best; so hard to judge.) I'd say, from what was evident on...

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

I don't see pessimism about Gophers VB. Instead VB fans EXPECT the Gophers to win & win big. That's a positive attitude I don't sense about many other MN teams, if any. Why not shoot for the top and make it clear in a constructive way where we'd like it to lead?

    Gopher Volleyball 2021-Fall Season

I suggested after the Texas game that MN has been out-recruited recently, not by much but enough that it's noticeable. It's been 4-5 years now since Samedy arrived. No newcomer approaching her level since then, not that I know of anyway.
